The names of ancient Egyptian kings such as Cheops, Akhenaten, and Ramesses II have become part of popular culture. Yet, for all the tombs and statuary that have survived over the millennia, surprisingly little remains that speaks to the workings of government, cabals in the palace, political factions, and the private lives of the royal families. In The Book of the Pharaohs, Pascal Vernus and Jean Yoyotte offer an indispensable, basic reference to the full human reality of royal Egypt. The Book of the Pharaohs is an encyclopedia made up of short essays on the pharaohs themselves, as well as on places, dynasties, personages, subjects, and themes relating to the kings and their rule. Entries range from "Adoratrices" (priestesses of Hathor, the Egyptian Aphrodite, whose role was to arouse the erotic impulse in the creator gods) and "Amarna" (the capital created by the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten) to "Scorpion" (who ruled before the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt) and "Zero Dynasty" (the designation for pre-pharaonic Egypt). In addition, Vernus and Yoyotte include a substantial essay on the sources for Egyptian history, a bibliography of books for general readers, and a chronological table that organizes the major periods of Egyptian history and notes the most illustrious royal names from each.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1850 edition. Excerpt: ...with this king. It does not prove that he was called Sesostris in the Egyptian annals; but it shows that one remarkable circumstance which Herodotus relates of Sesostris is historically true of Rameses1II., and justifies our application of the written history, in which no Rameses appears, to the monumental, in which the name of Sesostris is not found. That we should be able to frame from their union a narrative in which every part of both shall find a place, is not to be expected. Diodorus complains that the Greeks did not agree with one another in what they related of Sesostris (his Sesoosis), nor the priests with those who panegyrized him in song' He himself begins his narrative with a circumstance which betrays its own origin in popular and poetical fiction. It is a characteristic of such fictions to represent the birth and earliest years of those who are afterwards to play a distinguished part, as corresponding with their subsequent celebrity. The father of Sesostris collected together all the male children who were born in Egypt on the same day with him, and caused them all to be educated together, that early familiarity might prepare them for friendly cooperation'. Their training was such as the future conquerors of the world from India to Thrace might well need; none was allowed to take food in the morning till he had run 180 stadia, at least eighteen miles. While yet a youth he was sent with his companions by his father to undergo a still further hardening in the deserts of Arabia, and subdued its inhabitants, on whom the yoke had never been imposed before. Next he was dispatched to the west, where he subdued also the greater part of Libya. That some reason might appear why his father anticipated such celebrity for his son...

Following on from Kleopatra, the glittering epic of Egypt's queen continues as she allies herself with Anthony and begins a love story that immortalizes her as one of history's greatest political players and most tragic heroines. Kleopatra has been reinstated to the throne and now shares her bed with Caesar. But in order for their infant son to be officially recognized as Caesar’s rightful heir, Kleopatra must journey with the child to Rome. There she forms an intimate bond with Antony, Caesar’s second-in command. When Caesar is assassinated, it is Antony who wages war against the slain ruler’s monstrous nephew, Octavian, who claims it is he, and not Kleopatra’s son, who is next in line to rule. Now Antony and Kleopatra are inextricably allied in love and a fierce battle against a formidable enemy, where no less than the control of the world is at stake.

Warrior, mighty builder, and statesman, over the course of his 67-year-long reign (1279-1212 BCE), Ramesses II achieved more than any other pharaoh in the three millennia of ancient Egyptian civilization. Drawing on the latest research, Peter Brand reveals Ramesses the Great as a gifted politician, canny elder statesman, and tenacious warrior. With restless energy, he fully restored the office of Pharaoh to unquestioned levels of prestige and authority, thereby bringing stability to Egypt. He ended almost seven decades of warfare between Egypt and the Hittite Empire by signing the earliest international peace treaty in recorded history. In his later years, even as he outlived many of his own children and grandchildren, Ramesses II became a living god and finally, an immortal legend. With authoritative knowledge and colorful details Brand paints a compelling portrait of this legendary Pharaoh who ruled over Imperial Egypt during its Golden Age.
