In this early lecture series, the author of Being and Time develops his unique approach to understanding humanity’s relationship to the world. This volume presents a collection of Martin Heidegger’s lectures delivered at the University of Freiburg in the winter of 1921–1922. Preceding Being and Time, the work shows the young Heidegger introducing novel vocabulary as he searches for his genuine philosophical voice. In this course, Heidegger first takes up the role of the definition of philosophy and then elaborates a unique analysis of “factical life,” or human life as it is lived concretely in relation to the world, a relation he calls “caring.” Heidegger’s descriptions of the movement of life are original and striking. As he works out a phenomenology of factical life, Heidegger lays the groundwork for a phenomenological interpretation of Aristotle, whose influence on Heidegger’s philosophy was pivotal.

This book re-examines the relationship between phenomenology, interpretation, and the problem of community, a topic that has been at the center of recent debates in Continental thought. From the outset, phenomenology was intimately connected with the issues of interpretation and community, both by theoretical paradigm and substance. Indeed, Husserl sought to distinguish his own foundational investigations from others that stressed the interpretive and historical character of the rational or that contested such foundational enterprises out of a concern for the critique of ideology and the "hermeneutics of suspicion." He argued equally as stringently for the primacy of such theoretical issues over other studies, such as ethics, political theory, or aesthetics, that shaped the itinerary of philosophical inquiry. In a similar manner, the essays encountered here continue the debates that accompany the complex phenomenologies of post-Kantian Continental thought concerning the rational status of the self and its ambiguous relationship with the community—and thus, in turn, the ambiguous relationship between the "rational community," civil society, and the contested dynamics of its conceptualization and adjudication. Because it considers these issues from several viewpoints, including the legacy of German idealism and the discourses emerging from the Frankfurt School and contemporary post-structuralist thought, this volume serves both as an introduction to Continental philosophy on these issues as well as a guide to the status of recent debates.

This book elaborates a moral realism of phenomenological inspiration by introducing the idea that moral experience, primordially, constitutes a perceptual grasp of actions and of their solid traces in the world. The main thesis is that, before any reference to values or to criteria about good and evil—that is, before any reference to specific ethical outlooks—one should explain the very materiality of what necessarily constitutes the ‘moral world’. These claims are substantiated by means of a text- centered interpretation of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics in dialogue with contemporary moral realism. At first blush, phenomenology seems to be concerned preeminently with questions of knowledge, truth, and perception, and yet closer inspection reveals that the analyses of these phenomena remain bound up with language and that consequently phenomenology is, inextricably, a philosophy of language.
