Regarding philosophical importance, Edmund Husserl is arguably "the" German export of the early twentieth century. In the wake of the linguistic turn(s) of the humanities, however, his claim to return to the "Sachen selbst" became metonymic for the neglect of language in Western philosophy. This view has been particularly influential in post-structural literary theory, which has never ceased to attack the supposed "logophobie" of phenomenology. "Phenomenology to the Letter. Husserl and Literature" challenges this verdict regarding the poetological and logical implications of Husserl’s work through a thorough re-examination of his writing in the context of literary theory, classical rhetoric, and modern art. At issue is an approach to phenomenology and literature that does not merely coordinate the two discourses but explores their mutual implication. Contributions to the volume attend to the interplay between phenomenology and literature (both fiction and poetry), experience and language, as well as images and embodiment. The volume is the first of its kind to chart a phenomenological approach to literature and literary approach to phenomenology. As such it stands poised to make a novel contribution to literary studies and philosophy.

Edith Stein and Roman Ingarden, both students of Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology, corresponded extensively between 1917 and 1938. These 162 letters, most published here for the first time, reveal a friendship that spanned the adult lives of these two important 20th-century thinkers. Through Stein’s letters, the reader can follow her through her student days, her conversion from Judaism to Catholicism, her professional life, and her decision to become a Carmelite nun in the Carmel of Cologne, where she took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. The letters end in 1938, when the Nazi threat escalating throughout Eastern Europe made correspondence difficult, especially across national borders. Four years later Edith Stein was arrested in the Netherlands by the Nazi SS, transported to Auschwitz, and was killed in the gas chambers. Roman Ingarden survived World War II, continued his academic work in Poland, and died in 1970. Although Ingarden’s letters to her have not been found, Stein’s to him also help us understand the life of this Polish phenomenologist and aesthetician, his life in Poland, his intellectual development, his own writings and academic career, and the editorial assistance Stein provided for all of the works he published in German. Translated from the newest critical German edition by Dr. Hugh Candler Hunt, this premiere English edition of her correspondence—volume 12 of ICS Publications’ Collected Works of Edith Stein—gives us a fascinating and intimate window into Edith Stein’s rich life and personality, revealing her warmth and humor, deep capacity for friendship, and remarkable intellectual and spiritual depth. Book has 13 photos, bibliography and linked index.

Heidegger written by W.J. Richardson and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Philosophy categories.

Dear Father Richardson: It is with some hesitation that I attempt to answer the two principal questions you posed in your letter of March I, 1962. The first touches on the initial impetus that determined the way my thought would gO. l The other looks for information about the much discussed "reversal" [in my development]. I hesitate with my answers, for they are necessarily no more than indications [of much more to be said]. The lesson of long experience leads me to surmise that such indications will not be taken as directions for the road of independent reflection on the matter pointed out which each must travel for himself. [Instead they] will gain notice as though they were an opinion I had ex pressed, and will be propagated as such. Every effort to bring what has been thought closer to prevailing modes of (re)presen tation must assimilate what-is-to-be-thought to those (re)presen tations and thereby inevitably deform the matter. 2 This preamble is not the lament of a man misunderstood; it is rather the recognition of an almost insurmountable difficulty in making oneself understood. The first question in your letter reads: "How are we properly to understand your first experience of the Being-question in 1 [Translator's note. With regard to the translati~ of Denken, see below, p. 16, note 43. ] I [Translator's note. For the translation of VorsteUung by "(re)presentation," see below, p. 108, note 5. ] VORWORT Sehr geehrter Herr P.

The Reception Of Husserlian Phenomenology In North America written by Michela Beatrice Ferri and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-05 with Philosophy categories.

This book presents a historiographical and theorical analysis of how Husserlian Phenomenology arrived and developed in North America. The chapters analyze the different phases of the reception of Edmund Husserl’s thought in the USA and Canada. The volume discusses the authors and universities that played a fundamental role in promoting Husserlian Phenomenology and clarifies their connection with American Philosophy, Pragmatism, and with Analytic Philosophy. Starting from the analysis of how the first American Scholars of Edmund Husserl's thought opened the door to the reception of his texts, the book explores the first encounters between Pragmatism and Husserlian Phenomenology in American Universities. The study focuses, then, on those Scholars who fled from Europe to America, from 1933 onwards, to escape Nazism - Felix Kaufmann, Alfred Schutz, Aron Gurwitsch, Herbert Spiegelberg, Fritz Kaufmann, among the most notable - and illustrates how their teaching provided the very basis for the spreading of Husserlian Phenomenology in North America. The volume examines, then, the action of the 20th Century North-American Husserl Scholars, together with those places, societies, centers, and journals, specifically created to represent the development of the studies devoted to Husserlian Phenomenology in the U.S., with a focus of the Regional Phenomenological Schools.

Cumming also shows that conversion is not merely a personal predisposition of Sartre's--further manifest in his later conversions to Heidegger and to a version of Marxism. Conversion is also philosophical preoccupation, illustrated by the "conversion to the imaginary" whereby Sartre explains how he himself, as well as Genet and Flaubert, became writers. Finally, Cumming details how Husserl's phenomenological method contributed both to the shaping of Sartre's style as a literary writer and to his theory of style.

Edmund Husserl And Eugen Fink written by Ronald Bruzina and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-01 with Philosophy categories.

div Eugen Fink was Edmund Husserl’s research assistant during the last decade of the renowned phenomenologist’s life, a period in which Husserl’s philosophical ideas were radically recast. In this landmark book, Ronald Bruzina shows that Fink was actually a collaborator with Husserl, contributing indispensable elements to their common enterprise. Drawing on hundreds of hitherto unknown notes and drafts by Fink, Bruzina highlights the scope and depth of his theories and critiques. He places these philosophical formulations in their historical setting, organizes them around such key themes as the world, time, life, and the concept and methodological place of the “meontic,” and demonstrates that they were a pivotal impetus for the renewing of “regress to the origins” in transcendental-constitutive phenomenology. /DIV

This volume consists of over one-hundred epistolary exchanges between Martin Heidegger and one of his earliest students, Karl Löwith, who became a renowned and accomplished philosopher in his own right. The letters span a period of just over fifty years and range from casual to philosophical in tone. The more philosophically oriented letters shed important light on the ideas and writings of both Heidegger and Löwith, while the more casual letters provide insight into Heidegger the teacher, the man, and the friend, as well as into Löwith the devoted but reflectively critical student. By providing previously untranslated materials, this volume contributes to a greater understanding of the lives and the work of these two crucially important philosophers. Additionally, through the various bibliographical and cultural details that are disclosed along the way, this volume contributes to a greater understanding of German intellectual and cultural history during the span of its most challenging and devastating years.
