Phillis Wheatley was the first African American to publish a book. Born in Gambia in 1753, she came to America aboard a slave ship, the Phillis. From an early age, Wheatley exhibited a profound gift for verse, publishing her first poem in 1767. Her tribute to a famed pastor, “On the Death of the Rev. Mr. George Whitefield,” followed in 1770, catapulting her into the international spotlight, and publication of her 1773 Poems on Various Subjects Religious and Moral in London created her an international star. Despite the attention she received at the time, history has not been kind to Wheatley. Her work has long been neglected or denigrated by literary critics and historians. John C. Shields, a scholar of early American literature, has tried to help change this perception, and Wheatley has begun to take her place among the elite of American writers. In Phillis Wheatley and the Romantic Age, Shields contends that Wheatley was not only a brilliant writer but one whose work made a significant impression on renowned Europeans of the Romantic age, such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who borrowed liberally from her works, particularly in his famous distinction between fancy and imagination. Shields shows how certain Wheatley texts, particularly her “Long Poem,” consisting of “On Recollection,” “Thoughts on the Works of Providence,” and “On Imagination,” helped shape the face of Romanticism in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Phillis Wheatley and the Romantic Age helps demolish the long-held notion that literary culture flowed in only one direction: from Europe to the Americas. Thanks to Wheatley’s influence, Shields argues, the New World was influencing European literary masters far sooner than has been generally understood.

Disability and Academic Exclusion interrogates obstacles the disabled have encountered in education, from a historical perspective that begins with the denial of literacy to minorities in the colonial era to the later centuries’ subsequent intolerance of writing, orality, and literacy mastered by former slaves, women, and the disabled. The text then questions where we stand today in regards to the university-wide rhetoric on promoting diversity and accomodating disability in the classroom. Brief studies on the devaluation of authenticity and literacy in the works of Sojourner Truth, Phillis Wheatley, and Helen Keller serve to demonstrate how earlier cultural viewpoints undermined the teachability of women, the disabled, and people of color, and to question if these viewpoints have been redressed or whether they are maintained in the academy’s discursive relationship to educating the disabled. The guiding questions ask if colleges today recognize the exclusionary practices inherent in the category of disability, whether the delineation of disability in the classroom parallels earlier isolating minority categories across intersectional subjectivities and, accepting disability as a category that is necessary in order to protect civil rights, whether disability can be incorporated more inclusively in what E.R. Weatherup has termed a constellation of student learners. The text concludes that the academy must confront the persistent historical situating of disability as one of deficiency in order to bring disability into the classroom, and at the same time it must engage with a humanistic and humanizing vocabulary, allowing for more voices to be heard from the embodied, subjective experiences of the disabled student body.

"In Before Modernism: Inventing American Lyric, Virginia Jackson argues that in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Black poetics, in antagonism with White poetics, produced the conditions for the invention of modern American poetry. This is not a history of American poetry that begins with the Puritans and stretches to the present, or that jumps from the British Romantics to Walt Whitman, or that restricts the influence of African American poetry to a separate tradition; instead, this book emphasizes the many ways in which early Black poets invented what Phillis Wheatley Peters called "the deep design" of American lyric. Through readings of the poetics of Wheatley Peters, George Moses Horton, James Monroe Whitfield, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper-as well as the poetics of now-neglected but once-popular White poets William Cullen Bryant and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow-Jackson suggests that Black poetics inspired the direction that American poetics has taken for the last two centuries. Thus this book represents not only a new history but a new theory of American poetry. Over the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, as an idea of poetry based on genres of poems (ballads, elegies, odes, hymns, drinking songs, epistles, etc.) gave way to an idea of poetry based on genres of people (Black, White, male, female, Indigenous, etc.), almost all poetry became lyric poetry.
