Ein beträchtlicher Teil der literaturwissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung geht von der Voraussetzung aus, dass sprachliche Gebilde mehr sind als graphische Muster auf dem Papier. Man nimmt an, dass es zusätzlich zur wahrnehmbaren Gestalt des Zeichens auch noch eine Bedeutung geben müsse, die man zwar nicht mit den äußeren Sinnen, aber doch mit dem Geist erfassen kann. Dass dieses Modell des Verstehens als Bedeutungszuweisung problematisch ist, wurde häufig bemerkt, doch es ist bislang nicht ausreichend geklärt, wie die Literaturwissenschaft den Mythos der Bedeutung und den damit verbundenen Mythos der Innenwelt überwinden und zugleich den Anspruch aufrechterhalten kann, eine empirische Wissenschaft zu sein, die erkennen will, was Zeichen bedeuten, und analysiert, wie Texte beschaffen sind. Die Studie schlägt als Antwort auf diese Herausforderung eine Neufassung von Grundbegriffen wie ‚Text‘, ‚Bedeutung‘, ‚Absicht‘, ‚Interpretation‘, ‚Verstehen‘, ‚Würdigung‘ und ‚Einfühlung‘ vor. Sie skizziert eine verhaltensorientierte Philosophie der Literaturwissenschaft, derzufolge die Forschung den historisch situierten Gebrauch der Wörter untersucht und ihn unter Aufbietung des eigenen Verhaltensrepertoires verlebendigt.

In Give the Word eleven scholars of literature and philosophy (Susan Bernstein, Michèle Cohen-Halimi, Peter Fenves, Sean Gurd, Daniel Heller-Roazen, Jan Plug, Gerhard Richter, Avital Ronell, Thomas Schestag, Ann Smock, and Vincent van Gerven Oei) take up the challenge presented by Hamacher’s theses. At the close Hamacher responds to them in a spirited text that elaborates on the context of his 95 Theses and its rich theoretical and philosophical ramifications. The 95 Theses, included in this volume, makes this collection a rich resource for the study and practice of “radical philology.” Hamacher’s philology interrupts and transforms, parting with tradition precisely in order to remain faithful to its radical but increasingly occluded core. The contributors test Hamacher’s break with philology in a variety of ways, attempting a philological practice that does not take language as an object of knowledge, study, or even love. Thus, in responding to Hamacher’s Theses, the authors approach language that, because it can never be an object of any kind, awakens an unfamiliar desire. Taken together these essays problematize philological ontology in a movement toward radical reconceptualizations of labor, action, and historical time.

This volume contains 17 articles, developed from papers that were chosen from among the 44 presentations of work on NooJ presented at the 2013 International NooJ Conference in Saarbrücken in June, 2013. NooJ is a linguistic development environment that allows linguists to formalize a wide gamut of linguistic phenomena, and then test, adapt, share and accumulate each elementary description to build linguistic “modules”, that is, structured libraries of linguistic resources. NooJ is also used as a corpus processor that can launch sophisticated queries over large corpora of texts, in order to produce various results, including concordances, statistical analyses, information extraction, and automatic translation. NooJ is used in many research centers; it has recently been endorsed by the European Metashare CESAR Project, and is now available as an open source software at the METASHARE repository. NooJ is also used by a growing number of software companies to construct various Natural Language Processing applications.

Eduard Meyer (1855-1930) was among the most important historians of his age. After Mommsen he is the best known German ancient historian. From 1902 he taught ancient history in Berlin and from 1919/20 he was vice-chancellor. As the Christian doctrine of Incarnation asserts, “the Word became Flesh.” Yet, while this metaphor is grounded in Christian tradition, its varied functions far exceed any purely theological import. It speaks to the nature of God just as much as to the nature of language. In Philology of the Flesh, John T. Hamilton explores writing and reading practices that engage this notion in a range of poetic enterprises and theoretical reflections. By pressing the notion of philology as “love” (philia) for the “word” (logos), Hamilton’s readings investigate the breadth, depth, and limits of verbal styles that are irreducible to mere information. While a philologist of the body might understand words as corporeal vessels of core meaning, the philologist of the flesh, by focusing on the carnal qualities of language, resists taking words as mere containers.
