Introduction Yoga tradition is very ancient. In Pāṇini, the word 'Yoga' is derived from the root 'Yuj', in the sense of samādhi (concentration) and 'Yujir' in sense of joining or connecting. According to Pāṇini, 'Yogi' means a man who practices religious austerities. In early 1920's, during excavation of Indus civilization (about 3000BC), traces of early Yoga were found in Indus cities. There are some Terra-Cotta seals found during excavation. They are called as "Paśupati Seal" which show horned deities seated in manner of the yogic postures. The Vedas, Upaniṣads, Mahābhārata, Smṛtis, Purāṇas, Yogavāsiṣṭha describe Yoga. Eighteen chapters of Bhagavad Gītā are named as different Yogas. Vaiṣṇavism and Śaivism also mention Yoga. In the Indian Philosophy, there are six darśanas or philosophical systems. Most of these systems accept Yoga as means to attain liberation. Bhagavān Patañjali, for the first time, took great efforts to collect these scattered pearls, and systematized them in aphoristic style or Yoga sūtras. He gave' Yoga', a status of darśana, a Philosophical school. Bhāśya of Vyāsa, Vācaspati miśra and Vijñāna bhikkhu are well known. Along with the Pātañjala Yoga, it is necessary to consider the two important śramaṇa traditions of India. The two śramana traditions, the Buddhism and Jainism are avaidic or nāstika darśanas as they do not accept authority of Vedas. While remaining four systems accept authority of the Vedas. Thus, they are called as āstika darśanas. Both Mahāvīra and Buddha did not accept the authority of the Vedas and criticized sacrifice system. They undertook rigorous practice of virtues,

While Indian Philosophy has been in our time the object of mainly academic interest Yoga has become in recent decades and object of wide spread popular interest particularly in the west. But from at least the time of the Upanisads till Aurobindo Yoga has been an important source of inspiration to philosophy in Indian and philosophy in turn has often provided in turn has often provided an initial impetus and motivation for the practice of yoga and has produced various interpretations of Yogic experiences. It is therefore most appropriate that Yoga and Indian philosophy be given equal attention both in the context of academic research and in the framework of popularising Yoga.

It compares and contrasts some of the central concepts of yoga with similar concepts of other systems of Indian philosophical thought. The book is divided into eleven chapters. Tracing The Path Of Yoga written by Stuart Ray Sarbacker and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-01 with Philosophy categories.

Clear, accessible, and meticulously annotated, Tracing the Path of Yoga offers a comprehensive survey of the history and philosophy of yoga that will be invaluable to both specialists and to nonspecialists seeking a deeper understanding of this fascinating subject. Stuart Ray Sarbacker argues that yoga can be understood first and foremost as a discipline of mind and body that is represented in its narrative and philosophical literature as resulting in both numinous and cessative accomplishments that correspond, respectively, to the attainment of this-worldly power and otherworldly liberation. Sarbacker demonstrates how the yogic quest for perfection as such is situated within the concrete realities of human life, intersecting with issues of politics, economics, class, gender, and sexuality, as well as reflecting larger Indic religious and philosophical ideals.

A collection of classic essays by two highly regarded scholars on the development of yoga and its rapport with other religious traditions. Georg Feuerstein, one of the world's foremost scholars of yoga, and Jeanine Miller, long recognized for her insightful commentaries on the RgVeda, here pool their considerable talents in a look at the development of yogic thought across the ages and its similarities with the Christian mysticism of Meister Eckhart. Two of their essays included here, one concerning the essence of yoga and the other looking at the meaning of suffering in yoga, have long been singled out by indologists for correcting prevalent misconceptions and providing a conceptual framework for many of the subsequent studies in that field. The reprinting of these important essays in The Essence of Yoga gives new readers a chance to share some of the authors' earliest insights into yoga and their deep conviction that these discoveries are of the highest significance for a proper understanding of the human condition.

Sage Patanjali systematized the science of Yoga that has been in existence in India since times immemorial. Historians believe that he lived near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh in BC 400. So the Yoga Sutras are about 2400 years old. He built the edifice of his Yoga Sutras on the foundation of a much older Sankhya philosophy. In this course he appears to have borrowed some concepts from Buddhist philosophy also. Sage Vyasa, King Bhoja, Adi Sankara, Vachasapati Misra, Vijnana Bhikshu, Ramananda Saraswati were the main commentators on these highly abstruse sutras. In the modern age, Swami Vivekananda breathed new life into them by his English speeches some 125 years back. I made a humble attempt to explain the intricacies of these sutras in a simple manner. I believe this book will make the reader understand the real meanings of the sutras in a simple and straight manner.
