Admired by philosophers such as Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Freud, Benjamin, and Wittgenstein, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799) is known to the English-speaking world mostly as a satirist. An eminent experimental physicist and mathematician, Lichtenberg was knowledgeable about the philosophical views of his time, and interested in uncovering the philosophical commitments that underlie our common beliefs. In his notebooks (which he called his Waste Books) he often reflects on, challenges, and critiques these philosophical commitments and the dominant views of the Enlightenment, German idealism, and British empiricism. This scholarly collection of Lichtenberg's philosophical aphorisms contains hundreds of trenchant observations drawn from these notebooks, many of which have been translated into English here for the first time. It also includes a historical and philosophical introduction to his writings, situating him in the history of philosophy and ideas, and is supplemented with a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and extensive introductory and textual notes explaining his references.

Dating from her years as a philosophy student at the Sorbonne, this is the 1926-27 diary of the teenager who would become the famous French philosopher, author, and feminist, Simone de Beauvoir. Written years before her first meeting with Jean-Paul Sartre, these diaries reveal previously unknown details about her life and offer critical insights into her early philosophy and literary works. Presented here for the first time in translation and fully annotated, the diary is completed by essays from Barbara Klaw and Margaret A. Simons that address its philosophical, historical, and literary significance. The volume represents an invaluable resource for tracing the development of Beauvoir’s independent thinking and influence on the world.

The essays in this collection are not confined to any one period or any one subject. Nearly every one, in the author's words, is "an attempt to understand some short passage from the work of some philosopher, teasing the passage with analogies of sense. If one were to describe the method, as Descartes described his method, the method of doubt, perhaps it might best be described as the method of failure."

This book contains both major philosophical books authored by master of prose and philosopher of pessimism - Edgar Saltus. A lively and talented writer, Saltus tackles topics of philosophy which might otherwise be dry or boring with a sparkling wit. Clarity is given to subjects which would normally turn off readers from even approaching, and it is with an entertaining passion that Saltus tackles a variety of topics concerning pessimism, religion and human life. The Philosophy of Disenchantment is a retrospective examination of pessimism, with particular emphasis on philosophers such as Arthur Schopenhauer and Eduard Von Hartmann. Saltus presents an overview of the greatest questions pondered by these writers, giving his own frank yet eloquent views on both the queries themselves, and the men who brought them such renown. By contrast, The Anatomy of Negation looks at writers and philosophers who present antitheism (a belief in no deity) as a tenet of their writings. Of principle concern here is the French author Leconte de Lisle and the ancient Hindu sage Kapila. Tracing the doctrine back to the earliest days of Hinduism, it is here that Saltus presents both the religious outlook on living, and the atheistic outlook, for the reader's consideration. Although a somewhat obscure philosopher in the modern day, Saltus remains one of the best introductions to moral pessimism and philosophical questions surrounding religion. Quite popular and much-praised by contemporaries in Europe and the USA in his day, Saltus' fame would not continue after he perished in 1921. As well as philosophy, he also wrote fiction; two books of his were adapted into silent films in the early 1920s.

The History Of Philosophy written by Donald Phillip Verene and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-20 with Philosophy categories.

With the aim of guiding readers along, in Hegel’s words, “the long process of education towards genuine philosophy,” this introduction emphasizes the importance of striking up a conversation with the past. Only by looking to past masters and their works, it holds, can old memories and prior thought be brought fully to bear on the present. This living past invigorates contemporary practice, enriching today’s study and discoveries. In this book, groundbreaking philosopher and author Donald Verene addresses two themes: why should one study the historically “great” texts and, if such a study is necessary, how can one undertake it? Acting out against the rejection of the idea that there is a philosophical canon, he centers his argument on the “tetralogy” of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and Hegel. From his opening look at the rhetorical tradition, he brings those core ideals forward to classical Roman and medieval philosophers and then on into Renaissance and modern philosophy, including contemporary thinkers such as Derrida and Foucault. This vital chronological outline is supplemented by Verene’s contextualizing commentary. In ensuing sections, he offers guidance on reading philosophical works with “intellectual empathy,” suggests 100 essential works to establish a canon, illustrates the role of philosophers in history and society, and examines the nature of history itself. Ultimately, Verene concludes that history may be essential to philosophy, but philosophy is more than just its history.
