Nos expériences ordinaires suffisent-elles à donner un sens à nos vies ? N’y a-t-il pas au contraire des expériences exceptionnelles, rares, supérieures, qui rompent avec l’ordinaire et nous font toucher quelque chose de plus profond, de plus réel, d’absolu ? Les philosophes de l’expérience radicale soutiennent en effet qu’il existe une différence de nature entre deux grands types d’expériences : d’un côté, les expériences pratiques, habituelles, empiriques, qui nous maintiennent dans un régime d’apparences ; de l’autre, des expériences privilégiées, telles que l’extase mystique, l’effusion érotique ou l’exaltation de la fête, transformant l’individu qui les traverse, le transportant dans un espace et un temps propres, imposant de nouvelles valeurs et dévoilant le fond des choses par-delà les apparences. Stéphane Madelrieux analyse la philosophie française au prisme de cette recherche des expériences radicales en y distinguant deux voies : celle de l’expérience pure, mise en oeuvre par Bergson, Wahl et Deleuze, et celle de l’expérience-limite, qu’ont poursuivie jusqu’au bout Bataille, Blanchot et Foucault. Dans cet effort pour développer une nouvelle philosophie de l’expérience, les penseurs français rencontrent une autre tentative contemporaine et du même genre, celle du pragmatisme américain, dont ils s’inspirent parfois mais qui pourrait bien fournir les instruments de leur critique la plus décisive. Stéphane Madelrieux est professeur de philosophie à l’université Jean Moulin-Lyon 3. Il est l’auteur de William James. L’attitude empiriste (P.U.F., 2008) et de La philosophie de John Dewey (Vrin, 2016), il a dirigé Bergson et James. Cent ans après (P.U.F., 2011) et participé à l’édition critique des oeuvres de Bergson aux Presses universitaires de France.

What can philosophy bring to the reading of Beckett? Combining intertextual analysis with a ‘schizoanalytic genealogy’ derived from the authors of L’Anti-Œdipe, Garin Dowd’s Abstract Machines: Samuel Beckett and Philosophy after Deleuze and Guattari offers an innovative response to this much debated question. The author focuses on zones of encounter and thresholds of engagement between Beckett’s writing and a range of philosophers (among them Spinoza, Leibniz and Kant) and philosophical concepts. For a century now, scholars have searched for the “source” of Marcel Proust’s startlingly innovative novel À la recherche du temps perdu. Finding Grace with God: A Phenomenological Reading of the Annunciation engages in an interweaving of phenomenology, mystical theology, and feminist philosophy to unfold a theopoetic interpretation of the narrative of the Annunciation in the Gospel of Luke. It begins with a discussion of the foundational phenomenologies of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger and then moves to the more recent work of several French phenomenologists, including Paul Ricoeur, Jean-Louis Chretien, and Michel Henry. The interpretation is then expanded through the philosophies of Luce Irigaray, Jean-Luc Marion, and Jacques Derrida. Finally, the phenomenologies of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Martin Heidegger provide a means to interpret the Annunciation through theopoetics, as a text that is infused with possibility. Mary, filled with grace, is beckoned by the divine into possibility; responding in grace, she in turn beckons the divine into possibility. Transgressing the limits of language, this possibility slips into apophasis--into a moment of Gelassenheit, a mutual "letting-be" or releasement of Mary and the divine into a mystical union of love, a love that becomes manifest through a gift of life.
