Kant’s proclamation of humankind’s emergence from “self-incurred immaturity” left his contemporaries with a puzzle: What models should we use to sculpt ourselves if we no longer look to divine grace or received authorities? Deftly uncovering the roots of this question in Rhineland mysticism, Pietist introspection, and the rise of the bildungsroman, Jennifer A. Herdt reveals bildung, or ethical formation, as the key to post-Kantian thought. This was no simple process of secularization, in which human beings took responsibility for something they had earlier left in the hands of God. Rather, theorists of bildung, from Herder through Goethe to Hegel, championed human agency in self-determination while working out the social and political implications of our creation in the image of God. While bildung was invoked to justify racism and colonialism by stigmatizing those deemed resistant to self-cultivation, it also nourished ideals of dialogical encounter and mutual recognition. Herdt reveals how the project of forming humanity lives on in our ongoing efforts to grapple with this complicated legacy.

Philosophy for Children (P4C) has long been considered as crucial for children’s ethical and moral education and a decisive contribution for education for the democratic life. The book gathers contributions from experts in the field who reflect on fundamental issues on how childhood and ethics are interrelated within the P4C movement. The main interest of this volume is to offer an understanding of how different philosophical conceptions of childhood can be coordinated with different ethical and meta-ethical philosophical considerations in P4C addressing topics such as P4C and relativism, P4C and Virtue ethics, ethics and emotions in P4C, philosophical commitments and P4C application, and Socratic practice within a pragmatist framework. A thought-provoking collection about how assumptions of particular philosophical conceptions of childhood modify moral and ethical education and a testimony of the undeniable contribution of P4C for moral education and reconceptualization of childhood.

Belief, Morals and Education is a collection of seven essays by a noted European pedagogue dealing with the topic of education in religion, philosophy of life and morals. Included are: 'Educational Aims Today: Problematics and Guidelines', 'Belief and Education', 'Nietzsche's Doctrine of 'Necessary Illusions', 'Balanced Education' in a Society Lacking Certainty About Values, 'Values Education? Problematics and Possibilities', 'Education Today: Shared Responsibilities of Family and School' and 'Professional Morals for Teachers.' The author shows that it is not necessary for educators to succumb to moral relativism and abdicate their responsibility for education in religion, philosophy of life and morals. A common basic set of moral norms and values must and can be transmitted. Through a fair and balanced presentation and advocacy of those norms and morals necessary for the integration and perpetuation of society, teachers can help their students overcome the laming insecurities and doubts which prevent them from making a contribution to their society and from leading personally satisfying lives.

Kant S Conception Of Pedagogy written by G. Felicitas Munzel and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-31 with Education categories.

Although Kant was involved in the education debates of his time, it is widely held that in his mature philosophical writings he remained silent on the subject. In her groundbreaking Kant’s Conception of Pedagogy, G. Felicitas Munzel finds extant in Kant’s writings the so-called missing critical treatise on education. It appears in the Doctrines of Method with which he concludes each of his major works. In it, Kant identifies the fundamental principles for the cultivation of reason’s judgment when it comes to cognition, beauty, nature, and the exercise of morality while subject to the passions and inclinations that characterize the human experience. From her analysis, Munzel extrapolates principles for a cosmopolitan education that parallels the structure of Kant’s republican constitution for perpetual peace. With the formal principles in place, the argument concludes with a query of the material principles that would fulfill the formal conditions required for an education for freedom.

Moral Education And The Ethics Of Self Cultivation written by Michael A. Peters and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-30 with Education categories.

Educational philosophies of self-cultivation as the cultural foundation and philosophical ethos for education have strong and historically effective traditions stretching back to antiquity in the classical ‘cradle’ civilizations of China and East Asia, India and Pakistan, Greece and Anatolia, focused on the cultural traditions in Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism in the East and Hellenistic philosophy in the West. This volume in East-West dialogues in philosophy of education examines both Confucian and Western classical traditions revealing that although each provides its own distinct figure of the virtuous person, they are remarkably similar in their conception and emphasis on moral self-cultivation as a practical answer to how humans become virtuous. The collection also examines self-cultivation in Japanese traditions and also the nature of Michel Foucault’s work in relation to ethical and aesthetic ideals of Hellenistic self-cultivation.

Bildung And Paideia written by Marie-Élise Zovko and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-23 with Education categories.

Bildung and Paideia examines traditional humanistic ideals in light of philosophical reflection on the need for education of the whole human being. The study of what it is to be human is traditionally the task of the humanities. In recent years, however, the humanities have been increasingly subordinated to technological, economic, and utilitarian aims. Do the humanities still have a fundamentally distinct task to fulfil in education? Today’s reduction of educational outcomes to measurable competencies and economically exploitable skills is opposed to traditional ideals like that of Greek paideia and the German Romantic concept of Bildung, which emphasized formation of the whole human being. The present volume takes as its point of departure the conviction that the study of ‘the human experience'—whether through philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history, or languages—has something specific to offer in the realm of education today. The individual contributions examine the specific role of philosophy and the humanities in education from ancient times to the present and explore possibilities for conceiving philosophical models of education. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory.
