Danto unternimmt in seinem Aufsatz "Die Philosophierung der Literatur" den Versuch, einerseits die Philosophie von der Literatur abzugrenzen, andererseits aber auch eine Annäherung unversöhnlicher Positionen bzw. Deutungen zur Diskussion zu stellen. So argumentiert er im Spannungsfeld zwischen dem logischen Positivisten Rudolf Carnap und dem Begründer der Dekonstruktion Jacques Derrida. Für Carnap sind Aussagen, die nicht vermittels logischer Analyse verifiziert werden können, sinnlose Aussagen. Carnap begreift die Philosophie als strenge Wissenschaft und schließt alle anderen, nicht "sinnvollen" Aussagen, aus dieser aus. Derrida hingegen hat ein davon völlig verschiedenes Textverständnis. Es gibt in dem Sinne keine Abgrenzung literarischer zu philosophischen Texten. Jedem Text ist das ihm Vorangegangene, das nach ihm Folgende, die physische und geistige Existenz seines Autors und alles, was im weitesten Sinne den Text geprägt hat, immanent. In meiner Arbeit möchte ich den Spannungsbogen zwischen den Positionen Carnaps und Derridas nachzeichnen und untersuchen, ob es Danto gelingt, Philosophie und Literatur einerseits voneinander abzugrenzen, andererseits aber auch Berührungspunkte und Überschneidungen herauszuarbeiten. Weiter möchte ich anhand Dantos Aufsatz hinterfragen, ob und wie perspektivisch die beiden Disziplinen Philosophie und Literatur in Beziehung zueinander gebracht werden können.

When this book was first published, more than five years ago, I added an appendix on How the Pythagoreans discovered Proposition 11.5 of the 'Elements'. I hoped that this appendix, although different in some ways from the rest of the book, would serve to illustrate the kind of research which needs to be undertaken, if we are to acquire a new understanding of the historical development of Greek mathematics. It should perhaps be mentioned that this book is not intended to be an introduction to Greek mathematics for the general reader; its aim is to bring the problems associated with the early history of deductive science to the attention of classical scholars, and historians and philos ophers of science. I should like to conclude by thanking my translator, Mr. A. M. Ungar, who worked hard to produce something more than a mechanical translation. Present day neuroscience places the brain at the centre of study. But what if researchers viewed the brain not as the foundation of life, rather as a mediating organ? Ecology of the Brain addresses this very question. It considers the human body as a collective, a living being which uses the brain to mediate interactions. Those interactions may be both within the human body and between the human body and its environment. Within this framework, the mind is seen not as a product of the brain but as an activity of the living being; an activity which integrates the brain within the everyday functions of the human body.
