Nietzsches "politische" Philosophie zu thematisieren, erschien bis vor Kurzem nicht verlockend. Sie galt auch seinen Verteidigern als verfänglich und sein Staatsbegriff war, wenn überhaupt fassbar, so doch nicht gerade von sozialphilosophischem Glanz getragen. Wer sich mit Nietzsche politisch oder gar mit dessen "Staatsbegriff" befasst, kommt ohne Hinweise auf die Verwerfungen europäischer Humanitätstradition schlecht aus, und er wird daher, vor allem bei aktualisierenden Betrachtungen, auch kaum aus der wichtigen Differenz von europäisch kontinentalem und angelsächsischem Humanitätspathos entlassen. Dass das kontinentale Humanitätsprogramm in seinem Schwanken zwischen radikalem Moralismus und Geniusverliebtheit das Problematischere ist, sei vorab zugestanden, dass aber das angelsächsische, beziehungsweise damals so genannte "Englische" deswegen unerreichbar für Nietzsches Kritik (etwa am Philister-Ethos und am "letzten Menschen") sei, kann wohl kaum behauptet werden. Nietzsche politisch lesen heißt also, ihn ins Spannungsverhältnis von zwei nicht gegensätzlichen, aber doch differierenden Humanitätsprogrammen zu setzen.
