In the 19th century, the history of philosophy becomes the history of a particular science. Modern philosophical historiography is an ambivalent project. On the one hand, we find an affirmative concept of Bildung through tradition and historical insight; on the other, there arises a critical reflection on historical education in the light of an emerging critique of modern culture. The book offers a comprehensive overview of the debate.

G.W. Leibniz's legacy to philosophy is extraordinary for his vast body of work, for his originality and prescience, and for his influence. The aim of this volume is to provide a state-of-the-art exploration of Leibniz's philosophy and its legacy, especially in the period up to Kant. The essays collected here offer new insights into signature elements of Leibniz's thought - the theory of contingency, anti-materialism, the principle of sufficient reason, the metaphysics of substance, and his philosophy of mind - as well as the influence of predecessors such as Lull, Descartes, and Malebranche, the reckoning of his ideas in the works of Wolff and Kant, and the contributions of Clarke, Baumgarten, Meier, Du Chatelet, and others to the content, transmission, and reception of Leibnizian philosophy.

This volume grew out of a conference held at the Warburg Institute of London in June 1989 in memory of Charles B. Schmitt. The topic, one to which he had given much thought, was the ways knowledge changed from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, in terms of how it was classified, how it was transformed in science, philosophy and theology, and how it was institutionalized and how it was distributed. Contributions by an international group of scholars, Grazia Tonelli, Claire J. Farago, Charles Lohr, Allison Coudert, Nicholas Jardine, Lynn S. Joy, Robert Black, Susanna Akerman, Michael Hunter, and Jeremy D. Popkin treat different aspects of the topic. The editors, Donald R. Kelley and Richard H. Popkin have added an introduction and an epilogue.

History and Anti-History in Philosophy demonstrates the viability of the idea of the unity of philosophic thinking and the reflective practice of the history of philosophy. It is a concise in-depth history of the deconstructive turn in philosophy, and of the styles of historical and interpretive contextualization afforded by diverse schools of thought. Thematic unity arises from the focus of contributors on the historical dimension of reflection in philosophy.History of philosophy and intellectual history come together when they are forced to practice foundational analysis, namely, when they feel the need to uncover "indubitables" of society. Indubitables are deeply held, usually unnoticed premises upon which a society or group acts, builds, and speaks. By foundational analysis, the editors do not mean the search for acceptable starting points of intellectual exploration, but the ongoing criticism of all such postulates of faith. For those interested in contextual analysis of Kant, Hegel, Marx, Dewey, Mannheim, Husserl, Dilthey, Heidegger, and Gadamer, this is an invaluable guide. The editors make plain their belief that not using history, as have past philosophies, is unphilosophic?ideas in personal construction to a text that cannot supply reasons for being taken seriously in history. This volume illuminates the achievements of present-day social science insights. It merits a close reading by those for whom the history of ideas is a living entity.

This is the third volume of Models of the History of Philosophy, a collaborative work on the history of the history of philosophy dating from the Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. The volume covers a decisive period in the history of modern thought, from Voltaire and the great “Encyclopédie” of Diderot and d'Alembert to the age of Kant, i.e. from the histoire de l'esprit humain animated by the idea of progress to the a priori history of human thought. The interest of the philosophes and the Kantians (Buhle and Tennemann) in the study and the reconstruction of the philosophies of the past was characterized by a spirit that was highly critical, but at the same time systematic. The material is divided into four large linguistic and cultural areas: the French, Italian, British and German. The detailed analysis of the 35 works which can be considered to be “general” histories of philosophy is preceded and accompanied by lengthy introductions on the historical background and references to numerous other works bordering on philosophical historiography.

Western thought is surging, on the rebound from centuries of a merely background interest. Life is presenting crucial challenges to the human mind in science, technology, culture and social existence; challenges which reach the core of existence, human destiny, and the very meaningfulness - the human significance of life itself. The compartementalized sciences fall short of responding to this challenge, and present day philosophy by and large renounced its vocation of carrying the torch of reason. In this post-modern darkness, the Phenomenology of Life and of the Human Condition excavate and bring to light the Logos of Life in its entire harmonizing interplay. In the present collection, which continues the long and winding itinerary of our previous probings, we first uncover the new field of the ontopoiesis of life by means of the self-individualisation of life, the key to its labyrinth (Tymieniecka). A network of the ontopoietic itineraries manifest life in its innumerable perspectives: the constructive scanning (chronos and Kairos) are treated specifically by Eva Syristova, M. Bielawka, F. Bosio, and M.A. Cecilia. Individualising dynamisms of passions and the tying of the communal order by G. Bucher, R. Sweeney, A. Polis, A. Zvie Bar-On and others. The life-struggle for the light of the spirit by L. Sundararajan, I.R. Owen etc. The deep springs of mundaneity in human existence (moral sense, empathy, communication) by A. Luse, A. Ales Bello, J. Cibulka, J. Sivak, etc. The life of the spirit (historicity) by M. Sancipriano, M. Cekic, H. Rodríguez Piñeiro, S. Rinofner-Kreidl and others.

Scepticism in the History of Philosophy is a dialogue between leading Latin American and North American scholars concerned with the history of scepticism from ancient times to present day philosophy. The volume contains interesting discussions by a wide range of philosophers and historians of philosophy. The book should be of great interest to many philosophers who are interested in scepticism. It is unique in presenting in English the work of philosophers from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile; philosophers not well known to the English speaking world.
