Philosophy and World Problems theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Social Sciences and Humanities in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The Theme on Philosophy and World Problems deals, in three volumes and covers several topics, with a myriad of issues of great relevance to our world on Philosophy and World Problems. Philosophy resists conclusions because its method across disagreements – like modern science to which it gives rise - always leaves issues open to counter-argument and furtherance of understanding. This is how philosophy differs from religious, sectarian and other dogmas and closed systems of thinking. Yet agreement across the research contributing to this work is implicit or explicit on one meta principle: whatever is incoherent with organic, social and ecological life requirements through time is false, and evil to the extent of its reduction and destruction of life fields and support systems. These three volumes are aimed at a wide spectrum of audiences: University and College Students, Researchers and Educators.

"Here is a well-known story. Before sometime in the early modern period, Europeans believed that knowledge of nature came solely from reading books, above all those of Aristotle. Then the humanist re-discovery and translation of various ancient philosophical works led the number of "authorities" to grow, and alongside a monolithic "Aristotelianism" emerged any number of "-isms": Stoicism, Epicureanism, Platonism, Skepticism, and so on. Gradually, philosophers realized that they need not need rely on authorities at all, and began to use their own reason, coupled with experience and experiment. Scholasticism and humanism were dead, and the "Age of Reason" had begun, with Descartes as its iconoclastic father (perhaps with a little help from Bacon)"--

This book is Volume III of a three volume book plus accompanying website, www.bookaboutbooks.com, which adds to subjects already in the book or presents some books and subjects not contained in the books. The other volumes are available from the same booksellers as this volume. A Book about Books discusses what nonfiction books and subjects the author believes are important to know about. This book tries to point to problems in how we live and to see if books have any answers. Even though the books are complete, the author will update the website periodically in the future. E.H. Bernstein is a former librarian turned author. The subtitle of the book describes the author's objective: "A handbook in three volumes to a choice of essential books, writers and subjects in order to understand the world we live in, about 'big questions' and possible answers, about books and writers that may improve people's lives, about neglected writers, and other books and subjects." A Book about Books attempts to share what the author has learned from nearly 50 years of nonfiction reading and to provide the reader with samples of the most important authors and subjects from that reading. While the book is based on research, it is intended to be a handbook or guide by trying to make that research understandable to the general reader and to students, and for teachers – by pointing to what the author believes is missing from today's education. A curriculum proposal for college teachers is on the author's website. Note about how the volumes are related: each chapter is on a separate subject. So the chapters can be read individually, but the full message requires reading all the volumes. Volume I is important, but preliminary to the more important Volumes II and III. Note also that the book is not just about books, since other sources are also mentioned. The author believes we should listen to many voices, so the book draws on many types of writers from different times and countries. The author says: A contemporary writer once said that one of the purposes of writing is that books should be useful. I hope that my book will be of use.

The Existence Of The World written by Reinhardt Grossmann and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-06 with Philosophy categories.
Originally published in 1992. The history of Western philosophy can be seen as a battle between those that insist that the "physical universe" exists and those would claim that there is a much larger "world" which contains atemporal and nonspatial things as well. The central part of this book, and the battle, concerns the existence of universals. Starting with the mediaeval definition of the issue found in Porphry and Boethius, the author then considers modern and contemporary versions of the battle. He concludes that what is at stake between naturalists and ontologists is the existence and nature of a number of important categories, like structures, relations, sets, numbers and so on.
