Excerpt from The Philosophy of Arithmetic: Considered as a Branch of Mathematical Science and the Elements of Algebra Arithmetic is one of the two great branches of Mathematics; and, when scientifically treated, needs not fear a comparison with her more favoured sister. Geometry, either in precision of ideas, in clearness and certainty of demonstration, in practical utility, or in the beautiful deduction of the most interesting truths. In the order of instruction, Arithmetic ought to take precedence of Geometry; and has, I conceive, a more necessary connection with it, than some are willing to allow. "Number," as Mr. Locke remarks, "is that which the mind makes use of, in measuring "all things that by us are measurable." And I question whether the doctrine of ratio in Geometry has not been needlessly obscured, by a vain attempt to divest it of numerical considerations.
