Despair imposes heavy burdens upon us. Under these burdens, you may find yourself in a deep, dark, lonely place, utterly overwhelmed, deeply depressed, even considering suicide. But what if within this misery you found you possessed the power to choose?to choose to move toward healing, to listen to a message of hope, to craft your true identity and find goodness in your life? This wise and helpful guide explores the nature of personal suffering and brokenness and the potential for personal crisis to be a source of strength and renewal instead of despair and death. Examining the personal journeys of biblical and historical figures such as Moses, Maimonides, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Buber?as well as the author?s own personal experience with despair?it looks at brokenness as an inescapable element of the human condition. It traces the path of suffering from despair to depression to desperation to the turning point?healing?when first-hand knowledge of suffering can be transformed into blessing.Whether you have encountered despair and depression personally?through illness, loss, trauma or betrayal?or you know someone who is struggling with brokenness, this book will provide an informative, safe and comforting look at the nature of despair and the ways we can overcome it.

This book focuses on liminal bodies and their delicate transaction with themselves and other people’s bodies. More specifically, it explores the spatiality and discourses of the body dying; the body opened in surgery, or through MRIs, CATs, and sometimes in autopsies; the body preserved through computerized images such as those created by the Visual Human Project; the metonymic body that continues to live in another body through organ replacement; and the bodily parts cast in silver, and then abandoned in a museum. This study also analyzes the discourses of the contemporary body commissioned by the vast industry of mass-media. This type of body has started to direct itself toward frugal, almost furtive pleasures; consequently—unlike those seriously affected by illnesses—a body constantly guarded by fear eventually runs on empty, becomes a corps-déjà-vu, and thus moves toward different types of minimal and liminal topology. The primary works examined include memoirs (Marjorie Williams’s “Hit by Lightning: A Cancer Memoir,” Arthur W. Frank’s At the Will of the Body: Reflections on Illness, Audre Lorde’s The Cancer Journals), films (Alejandro Amenábar’s The Sea Inside, Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru, Pedro Almodóvar’s All about My Mother), stories (Marisa Silver’s “Night Train to Frankfurt”), visual artworks (as accomplished by Jo Spence, David Wojnarowicz, Félix Gonzales-Torres, and Natalie Horne) and plays (Bryony Lavery’s Last Easter, Paula Vogel’s Baltimore Waltz, William Hoffman’s As Is), which are read comparatively, namely as works positioned at the intersection between literature/visual art and social diaries. This book has become part of the collections of the world’s leading universities: Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, the Library of Congress, and more.

Birth of the Phoenix is a poignant yet gallant story of a woman whose marriage is filled not with love, but infinite pain and agony. Beth thought that her marriage to Jeff would save her from being alone after her parents death. Little did she know that Jeff would become her worst nightmare and her marriage would be her greatest and most painful sacrifice. On the surface, people would think she has everything that she wanted. However, in reality she was like a pincushion that was constantly poked with pinches, punches, harsh words, evil looks, insults, and hostility. In short, she was an abused wife until a near-death incident changed everything. From living in a hell-like marriage, with every moment with Jeff filled with nothing but fear and pain, Beth will reclaim her own life. She will experience rebirth and emerge as an empowered woman who will fight for her rights and the safety of her child, free from Jeff s hostility. Her battle in court against him has just begun. Will Beth triumph against Jeff, and will she be able to find true love? Through Birth of the Phoenix, readers will discover the essence and value of a woman and will understand the real meaning of a wife. It is a realistic portrayal of a womans complex life, which will empower women to fight for their rights and emerge as confident, brilliant, and powerful. Giving out insights on womens rights, this powerful book will make a difference in every womans life. Ms. Miller has gifted us with an authentic glimpse of not only the suffering but how victims of all kinds of abuse can heal and transform themselves, creating new lives that surpass their expectations. This novel will inspire and encourage women everywhere to find their power and take control of their lives. If you think world peace is a naive concept, Paul K. Chappell’s very existence will give you pause. It’s not enough to say that Chappell – a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran – is a soldier turned peace leader. Experiencing a traumatic upbringing and growing up mixed race in Alabama, he’s a young man forged by violence, rage, and racism into a living weapon for peace. By unlocking the mysteries of human nature, he shows how the muscles of hope, empathy, appreciation, conscience, reason, discipline, and curiosity give us the power to end the wars between countries, our ongoing war with nature, and the war in our hearts.
