Texas can boast of many diverse photographic collections--at least 350 in all. Held in public and private institutions, corporations, and governmental agencies, major and minor collections account for more than 100,000 photographs worldwide as well as national and regional interest. This guide to all the major and most of the minor photographic collections in Texas lists each by city; library, museum, or archive; and collection within that institution. For the major collections a statement of purpose gives the institution's nature and the types of material it collects, including nonphotographic materials. Other important information provided by the guide includes: addresses, hours, assistance available, permission fee requirements, and finding aids; statements of scope and listings of the locales represented; listings of the subjects and people pictured in the collections; a bibliography of publications that reproduce the collection's photographs; tables showing the number from each time period of each type of photograph, negative, or album; photographer's names and studios and other corporate identities responsible for the photographs; descriptions of the record groups included in the collections, including reference numbers, titles, subjects, responsible agencies, physical descriptions, and span dates; separate indexes to institutions, subjects, persons, locations, and photographers. Amassed by the renowned husband-and-wife team of Helmut and Alison Gernsheim between 1945 and 1963, it contains an unparalleled range of images, beginning with the world's earliest-known photograph from nature, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. The Gernsheim Collection includes some 35,000 major and representative photographs from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; a research library of some 3,600 books, journals, and published articles; about 250 autographed letters and manuscripts; and more than 200 pieces of early photographic equipment. Russell Lee is widely acclaimed as one of the most outstanding documentary photographers of the twentieth century. His images of American life during the Great Depression, created for the Farm Security Administration between 1936 and 1942, hold a preeminent place in one of history's best-known and most useful photographic collections. This famous body of work demonstrates Lee's extraordinary ability to reveal the humanity of his subjects and to become a part of the communities he photographed. The Byrd Williams Collection at the University of North Texas contains more than 10,000 prints and 300,000 negatives, accumulated by four generations of Texas photographers, all named Byrd Moore Williams. Beginning in the 1880s in Gainesville, the four Byrds photographed customers in their studios, urban landscapes, crime scenes, Pancho Villa’s soldiers, televangelists, and whatever aroused their unpredictable and wide-ranging curiosity. When Byrd IV sat down to choose a selection from this dizzying array, he came face to face with the nature of mortality and memory, his own and his family’s. In some cases these photos are the only evidence remaining that someone lived and breathed on this earth.
