Photography and architecture have a uniquely powerful resonance - architectural form provides the camera with the subject for some of its most compelling imagery, while photography profoundly influences how architecture is represented, imagined and produced. Camera Constructs is the first book to reflect critically on the varied interactions of the different practices by which photographers, artists, architects, theorists and historians engage with the relationship of the camera to architecture, the city and the evolution of Modernism. The title thus on the one hand opposes the medium of photography and the materiality of construction - but on the other can be read as saying that the camera invariably constructs what it depicts: the photograph is not a simple representation of an external reality, but constructs its own meanings and reconstructs its subjects. Leipzig-born photographer Margret Hoppe is a promising new voice in European photographic art. This new book features her series Apres une Architecture, a photographic perspective of Le Corbusier s architecture that refers to his concept of a modern architecture laid-out in the book "Vers une architecture" (Toward an Architecture) of 1923. Hoppe s images show Le Corbusier s use of exposed concrete, the clarity of his geometric shapes and the emblematic polychrome surfaces as symbols of his buildings. She investigates what remains today of these visions of architectural modernism, now that its legacy in many cases is adored as a monument rather than actually used and appreciated as a functional piece of architecture. The photographic image transforms the buildings into signs of a highly pictorial and sculptural aesthetic, enabling manifold views at Le Corbusier s work in the present day. The book also presents a selection of Hoppe s photographs of international modernist buildings, alongside two essays and a conversation with the artist. Julius Shulman, one of the great masters of modern architectural photography, is the preeminent recorder of early California modernism. By 1927 when he was sixteen, Shulman was already using the family Brownie box camera to document his Southern California surroundings and experiences; in 1936, his professional career was launched when he sent Richard Neutra some uncommissioned photographs of the architect's Kun House. Shulman went on to document the famous Case Study House Program (architects included Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig, and Eero Saarinen) and also the architecture of the 1930s through the 1980s, especially that of Southern California, but also country- and worldwide. His subjects included the buildings of R. M. Schindler, John Lautner, Raphael Soriano, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, and Oscar Niemeyer, among many others. Through his work, Shulman defined the image of Los Angeles and framed the architecture of the time for a global audience. In addition to an overview of Shulman's career and photographic oeuvre, this book emphasizes Shulman's method of "constructing" photographic views. These constructions, which complemented his innate ability to compose striking photographs often transcend reality to capture the spirit, time and place of a work of architecture. An analysis of architecture's visual presentation examines not only the media of the era - John Entenza's Arts & Architecture, for instance - but also the work of Shulman's photographic contemporaries.

What links are there between Piet Mondrian’s unfinished work Victory Boogie Woogie (1942–4) and post-war Japanese and Japanese-style architectural photography? As far back as the mid-1950s, critics and photographers were inclined to link Mondrian’s painting with modern Japanese architecture and some historians were to go so far as to assert that Mondrian himself had been influenced by traditional Japanese architecture.Powerful associations such as these contributed to the coming together of Western and Japanese architectural modernity. They also underpinned the survival of Japonisme in architecture, or put another way, of the neo-Japonisme that emerged after the Second World War. However, while this kinship between Mondrian’s abstraction and the aesthetic of Japanese architecture is little apparent in architecture, it does show in architectural photography. This book, which takes a sidelong look at Mondrian, examines the works of the foremost among Japanese and American architectural photographers in an effort to interpret the dynamics of how the world of architecture was Japanized between 1945 and 1985.
