There are many general titles on landscape photography, but few that really tackle the issue of composition in great depth. The Art of Landscape Photography assumes a good working knowledge of the technical basics - such as correct exposure, filtration, and sharpness - and concentrates on the 'heart and soul' of landscape photography: the principles of composition and aesthetic design to convey meaning and emotion. While technique will not be ignored, the emphasis will be on how it impacts on the aesthetics of the image - for example, using filtration to enhance the mood of a scene rather than simply to balance the extremes of contrast. Because of the nature of the subject matter, this is very much a picture-led book, with numerous example pictures to illustrate the compositional points being discussed. At the back of the book there will be thumbnails of all the pictures used, with a summary of the technical details - camera, lens, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, filtration - to ensure that those who crave technical information are not disappointed. Diverse Practices, the third book in the Active Landscape Photography series, presents a set of unique photographic examples for site-specific investigations of landscape places. Contributed by authors across academia, practice and photography, each chapter serves as a rigorous discussion about photographic methods for the landscape and their underlying concepts. Chapters also serve as unique case studies about specific projects, places and landscape issues. Project sites include the Miller Garden, Olana, XX Miller Prize and the Philando Castile Peace Garden. Landscape places discussed include the archeological landscapes of North Peru, watery littoral zones, the remote White Pass in Alaska, Sau Paulo and New York City’s Chinatown. Photographic image-making approaches include the use of lidar, repeat photography, collage, mapping, remote image capture, portraiture, image mining of internet sources, visual impact assessment, cameraless photography, transect walking and interviewing. These diverse practices demonstrate how photography, when utilized through a set of specific critical methods, becomes a rich process for investigating the landscape. Exploring this concept in relationship to specific contemporary sties and landscape issues reveals the intricacy and subtlety that exists when photography is used actively. Practitioners, academics, students and researchers will be inspired by the underlying concepts of these examples and come away with a better understanding about how to create their own rigorous photographic practices.

Just because we have a digital camera and know how to use it technically, does not mean that we can take great pictures. Composition, texture, mood, colour and, sometimes, pure creativity must all be present to achieve an award-winning image. In this, the second title in the Digital Photography series, we learn how to combine digital know-how with photographic ability. Dissecting some of the most sumptuous landscape images taken using digital means, the author shows us which elements are important to merge from the technical and aesthetical worlds. From the artistic point of view, light, composition and timing are weighed with enhancements that can be made digitally. We are shown what new considerations we should understand and what will affect our thought processes about taking photographs in the digital future.
