Images of a Lengthy War makes available for study and reference some of the important photographs of the Vietnam War, accompanied by brief narrative. The volume covers the three decades of the Army2s experience in Vietnam, from the early years of advice and support to the French government through active intervention with combat forces and gradual withdrawal. Many of the photographs were selected to show the complex nature of the war, in particular demands of conducting counterguerrilla operations while undertaking conventional campaigns against enemy regulars. While the focus of the work is the American military, policy decisions in Washington and political developments in Vietnam are also amply illustrated to place the war in context. As a unique form of evidence, the photographs are a valuable resource in recalling the look of Vietnam.

Striking aerial views of war, and of the scarred landscapes of its aftermath are the focus of this unique and multidisciplinary book. For the first time, the history, significance, and technology of military aerial photography are brought together and explored by military historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists. This new approach opens the door to a modern reassessment of military aerial imagery, reveals the concepts and philosophies that guided their production and interpretation, and illustrates the complex interaction between humans and technology in creating and understanding the landscapes of conflict.

For 100 years little attention has been paid to the Russian army that fought the Germans and the Austro-Hungarians in the First World War on the Eastern Front. Yet the Tsar's army played a critical part in the global conflict and was engaged in a sequence of shattering campaigns that were waged on a massive scale on several fronts across eastern Europe. ??Nik Cornish, in this heavily illustrated account, seeks to set the record straight. In a selection of almost 200 archive photographs he gives a graphic impression of the Russian army of the time, of the soldiers and commanders, and of the conditions in which they fought. He describes the key stages in the struggle - the battles of Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes, the Przemysl siege, the Gorlice-Tarnow and Brusilov offensives and the Romanian and Turkish campaigns.??His book is a fascinating photographic record of the army under the Tsar Nicholas II, then under the Provisional Government and the Bolshevik rule that succeeded him. The impact of the Russian revolution is also revealed in the photographs which take the story through from the initial outbreaks of discontent and the abdication of the Tsar to Lenin's take-over and the end of Russia's war - and of the imperial army _ in 1917.

During World War II the photographers of the United States armed forces created on film a pictorial record of immeasurable value. Thousands of pictures are preserved in the photographic libraries of the armed services but are little seen by the public. In the narrative volumes of UNITED STATES ARMY IN WORLD WAR II, now being prepared by the Office of the Chief of Military History of the United States Army, it is possible to include only a limited number of pictures. Therefore, a subseries of pictorial volumes, of which this is the last, has been planned to supplement the other volumes of the series. The photographs have been especially selected to show important terrain features, types of equipment and weapons, living and weather conditions, military operations, and matters of human interest. These volumes will preserve and make accessible for future reference some of the best pictures of World War II. An appreciation not only of the terrain upon which actions were fought, but also of its influence on the capabilities and limitations of weapons in the hands of both our troops and those of the enemy, can be gained through a careful study of the pictures herein presented. These factors are essential to a clear understanding of military history. The text was written and the photographs compiled by Capt. Kenneth E. Hunter and Miss Margaret E. Tackley; the volume was edited by Miss Mary Ann Bacon. The book deals with the Pacific Theater of Operations and is divided into six sections: (1) The Allied Defensive; (2) The Strategic Defensive and Tactical Offensive; (3) The Offensive-1944; (4) The Final Phase; (5) The China-Burma-India Theater; and (6) The Collapse of Japan and the End of the War in the Pacific. Each section is arranged in chronological order. All dates used are local dates, and it should be remembered that all dates west of the International Date Line are one day ahead of those east of the line. For example, 7 December 1941 at Pearl Harbor is the same day as 8 December 1941 in the Philippines. The written text has been kept to a minimum. Each section is preceded by a brief introduction recounting the major events which are set down in detail in the individual narrative volumes of UNITED STATES ARMY IN WORLD WAR II. The appendixes give information as to the abbreviations used and the sources of the photographs.

The Allied landings in France on 6 June 1944 were a turning point in world history. This book is a compilation of 200 images relating to all aspects of D-Day and the Normandy landings, beginning with the years of planning and preparations, all conducted in great secrecy. Next the focus is on the naval and air force operations, the airborne landings, and the British, American and Canadian forces who came ashore on 6 June. The book also covers the months of hard fighting during the Battle of Normandy, and through to the end of the war. Using the extensive archives of the Portsmouth D-Day Museum, this is a moving and unique record of a momentous time. Andrew Whitmarsh is military history officer for Portsmouth Museums & Records Service, a role which includes the curatorship of the D-Day Museum and Overlord Embroidery. The D-Day Museum opened in 1984 and is the United Kingdom's only museum with the sole purpose of telling the story of D-Day. He has been its curator since 2001. He has written a variety of popular and academic articles on military history, as well as D-Day in Photographs and Portsmouth at War for The History Press.
