L'imagination de nos aieux a produit une multitude de metaphores et de facons de dire nees de l'observation de la nature, a la fois pleines de fantaisie et de bon sens, mais pour la plupart tombees dans l'oubli. La langue d'aujourd'hui regorge encore des expressions figurees empruntees au monde des legumes. C'est que le potager inspire toujours le francais du XXIe s.: d'avoir la patate a etre dans les choux, en passant par faire le poireau et courir sur le haricot, les legumes sont employes a toutes les sauces... Souvent meme tres epicees: tremper son poireau ou degorger son panais (pour les messieurs), avoir le haricot a la portiere ou encore mouiller sa laitue (pour les dames), tournures erotico-argotiques dont l'etonnante inventivite prete a sourire. On ne connait pas completement une chose tant qu'on n'en sait pas l'histoire. Ceci est specialement vrai en matiere de langage, ou un detour par le passe s'avere indispensable a une approche serieuse de la phraseologie contemporaine. Cet ouvrage s'efforcera de retracer, pour chaque expression, l'evolution de son sens, mais aussi de sa forme. Bien souvent, des changements surviennent au cours de la vie d'une locution, car le francais, comme toute langue vivante, ne cesse d'evoluer, se modelant et de se remodelant perpetuellement. Avec le temps, certains elements d'une expression peuvent se modifier, s'obscurcir, comme pour dissimuler leur valeur initiale. Personne ne soupconne plus aujourd'hui l'origine obscene de s'occuper de ses oignons, alors que la forme primitive de cette expression etait sans equivoque. Le livre s'attachera aussi a dater avec precision chaque locution, a en eclaircir l'origine et en souligner la coherence avec des emplois plus anciens. Comme le dit Gaston Gross dans sa preface, Au fil de l'etude, on voit apparaitre, comme dans un bain revelateur, le role des legumes comme une source de l'imagination creatrice de la langue dans une nation interessee comme la notre par l'art de la table et celui des jardins. Certains legumes sont valorises (oseille, oignon, chou, poireau), d'autres non (artichaut, citrouille, courge, navet) et cela grace aux proprietes qui leur sont communement attribuees: leur forme qui explique les metaphores sexuelles (asperge, poireau), leur couleur, leur consistance, les vertus cachees qu'on leur reconnait. Cet ouvrage est a la fois une recherche savante dans le domaine du figement lexical, bien documentee, ecrite avec clarte, et en meme temps un livre qui interessera le grand public. Au moment ou la linguistique a perdu son rayonnement de naguere, des etudes de ce type peuvent contribuer a faire apprecier son utilite.

In the sixteenth century, a period of proliferating transatlantic travel and exploration, and, latterly, religious civil wars in France, the ship is freighted with political and religious, as well as poetic, significance; symbolism that reaches its height when ships—both real and symbolic—are threatened with disaster. The Direful Spectacle argues that, in the French Renaissance, shipwreck functions not only as an emblem or motif within writing, but as a part, or the whole, of a narrative, in which the dynamics of spectatorship and of co-operation are of constant concern. The possibility of ethical distance from shipwreck—imagined through the Lucretian suave mari magno commonplace—is constantly undermined, not least through a sustained focus on the corporeal. This book examines the ways in which the ship and the body are made analogous in Renaissance shipwreck writing; bodies are described and allegorized in nautical terms, and, conversely, ships themselves become animalized and humanized. Secondly, many texts anticipate that the description of shipwreck will have an affect not only on its victims, but on those too of spectators, listeners, and readers. This insistence on the physicality of shipwreck is also reflected in the dynamic of bricolage that informs the production of shipwreck texts in the Renaissance. The dramatic potential of both the disaster and the process of rebuilding is exploited throughout the century, culminating in a shipwreck tragedy. By the late Renaissance, shipwreck is not only the end, but often forms the beginning of a story.
