This is given to enable the student to understand or recognize the new features which he will continually meet with in the languages he is about to consider. This is followed by a critical examination of the nature of nouns, adjectives, cases, numbers, genders, comparisons. Much light is thrown upon the nature of pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, and conjunctions - Showing what they are, and the forms they have in other languages. There is a thorough review of the forms of the participle, and a consideration of its develop ment - the more particularly, because it is the basis of the verb. The nature of the verb, and the growth of moods and tenses, 'will be well illustrated in the comparative view that is given of it.
