Abstract: "The objective of this thesis by published works was to examine the patterns of, and key influences on physically activity of Australian children. In order to achieve this aim, the thesis includes four first author peer reviewed publications. Data were collected as part of the Lifestyle of our Kids (LOOK) study; a collaborative, multidisciplinary longitudinal study over 8 years of children from Canberra, Australia. Participants were initially aged 8 years (N= 853), from 29 government funded primary schools. The primary outcome measure of interest was objectively measured physical activity (pedometers and accelerometers) collected over one week annually from age 8 to 12 years and again at age 16 years. This thesis also incorporates a set of secondary potential explanatory variables of activity including cardio-respiratory fitness (20m multistage run), body composition (dual emission X-ray absorptiometry) and family and subject-level survey data."

Only about a third of children and under half of adults are meeting Australia¿s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines. Most children exceed the recommended amount of screen-based activity time, while time spent sitting at leisure goes up in adults as they get older. Inactivity increases overweight and obesity, raising the risk of chronic and lifethreatening diseases like cardiovascular disease, dementia, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Regular physical activity not only reduces health risks, it improves social and emotional health and wellbeing. Which groups ofinactive Australians are most at risk of lifestyle-related illness? What levelsand types of activity are required for optimal health at each life stage, and how can we incorporate regular activity into our daily lives? This book explains the risks and consequences of physical inactivity, and in turn promotes the benefits of being active. It¿s time to move it, or lose it.

Avoiding overweight and obesity is the best-established diet-related risk factor for cancer. The proportion of people who are overweight/obese is increasing, and the amount of physical activity is decreasing in most populations, including urban populations in many developing countries. The increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity is presumably due to the increasing availability of highly palatable, high-energy foods, and an increasing sedentary lifestyle due to mechanisation of both workplace and leisure activities. Overweight/obesity and reduced physical activity increases the risk of cancers in various organs. Maintaining a healthy body weight and regular physical activity is the second most important way to prevent cancer, after tobacco control. The suggestions of possible public health actions to tackle these risk factors include the promotion of balanced diets, which are not excessive in energy, and broad education and planning to enable and encourage physical activity during work and leisure. Recommendations and a full discussion of these topics are included in the sixth volume in this series of Handbooks.
