Infrastructuring written by A. Coskun Samli and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-12 with Business & Economics categories.

The recent global financial crisis has intensified concerns over how nations—both developed and developing — can revitalize economic growth and ensure opportunity for prosperity to all citizens. Many analysts and policymakers alike are looking to new business creation and the promotion of entrepreneurial practices as a panacea, or at least as a partial solution. A. Coskun Samli has argued in his two most recent books that the current model of globalization tends to marginalize the poor and that developing countries must rely on local business development, rather than exogenous forces, such as aid, loans, and trade, to catalyze growth. This third book in his trilogy argues that a "bottom-up" approach is necessary for developing countries to participate in globalization—but is not sufficient. He proposes that the economic goals of a country, a region, or a company are fulfilled first and foremost by a properly designed and maintained infrastructure, encompassing both physical elements, such as transportation and communication systems, and qualitative elements, such as functioning educational, legal, and governing institutions. In Infrastructuring, Samli analyzes the experiences of a variety of countries, including China, India, Ireland, and South Africa, to highlight the role that infrastructure plays in economic development, and considers its implications for such timely issues as new business creation, productivity, and supply chain logistics. Moreover, he outlines practical approaches to infrastructure management and policy oversight.

This book looks closely at the findings, contributions and recommendations on key issues concerning the concomitant subjects of the large and complex physical infrastructural provision like the seaport and the airport. Chapter 1 examines the seaports, where ships, cargoes, cranes, forklifts and storage yards, warehouses, lorries, roads and rail lines abound. Cargo handling needs specialist knowledge of the understanding supply chain management (SCM), and of the global integrated logistics hub, i.e. global gateway. Chapter 2 highlights that the growth of developing countries depends on adequate physical infrastructure to support economic development. The Chapter examines the merits of viable seaport infrastructure investment, of requiring large capital expenditure, long payback period and of structuring a defensible risk management strategy to deal with uncertainties. Singapore’s Jurong Port is the case study. Chapter 3 is concerned with the growth of developing countries ., which depends very much on having adequate physical infrastructure to support economic development. As a strategic response, many physical infrastructure investments like seaports are being privatised and highly purpose built. Merits of the viable, long term, seaport investment, and of structuring a defensible risk management strategy are essential to deal with uncertainties. Singapore’s Jurong Port is the case study. Chapter 4 is concerned with the global outreach of the small island state of Singapore’s seaport operation, owing to its chronic and limited land and small population size. To overcome limiting growth prospects, it is essential to grow and sustain the global outreach of the Port of Singapore. Last but not least, Chapter 5 recognizes that for public physical infrastructure developments like Singapore’s global Changi Airport, public funding is also a form of investment that entails uncertainties, which need to be rigorously evaluated with financial modelling on the risks and returns. Even more so for crucial seaport expansion and for developing a larger strategic objective for the long-term, well-being of the nation. Changi Airport is a key pillar of strength to support the growth of Singapore’s trade-oriented market economy.

The nation's physical infrastructure facilitates movement of people and goods; provides safe water; provides energy when and where needed; removes wastes; enables rapid communications; and generally supports our economy and quality of life. Developing a framework for guiding attempts at measuring the performance of infrastructure systems and grappling with the concept of defining good performance are the major themes of this book. Focusing on urban regions, within a context of national policy, the volume provides the basis for further in-depth analysis and application at the local, regional, state, and national levels.

Infrastructure For The Built Environment Global Procurement Strategies written by Rodney Howes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-14 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Throughout the world there is a growing demand for high quality public services to support socio-economic development. Infrastructure is central to improving the level of public services and the quality of the built environment. But in key areas such as transport, energy, water, healthcare, education and communications, public resources are not sufficient to keep pace with this demand. As the public sector struggles to keep up, the private sector is increasingly involved in the procurement of economic and social infrastructure. Until now procurement strategies have often concentrated on the mechanisms and the ‘bricks and mortar’ without a thorough analysis of the processes and their implications for services. The result is that all too often infrastructure projects are implemented in an ad hoc and fragmented way. In this ground-breaking book, Rodney Howes and Herbert Robinson provide a holistic approach to infrastructure provision that facilitates infrastructure delivery aimed at continuously improving the level and quality of services. Critical issues of policy and strategy, implementation, and operational aspects are examined within the context of sustainability. By emphasising the importance of procuring infrastructure within an overall national or regional development policy and strategy, the authors have demonstrated the importance of linking investment and resource decisions to local social, economic and environmental needs. With each chapter carefully written to reflect part of the infrastructure delivery chain and illustrated with practical examples and case studies from around the world, this book offers a new blueprint for infrastructure investment and resource management.
