Physics and Chemistry of Interfaces This general yet comprehensive introduction to the field focuses on the essential concepts rather than specific details, on intuitive understanding rather than learning facts. The text reflects the many facets of this discipline by linking fundamentals with applications. The theory behind important concepts is backed by scientific-engineering aspects, as well as by a wide range of high-end applications. Examples of applications from biotechnology to microelectronics are used to illustrate the basic concepts. New to this third edition are topics as second harmonic generation spectroscopy, surface diffusion, atomic layer deposition, superlubricity, and bioadhesion. At the same time, the discussions of liquid surfaces, the Marangoni effect, electric double layers, measurement of surface forces, wetting, and adsorption have been updated. The number and variety of exercises are increased and the references are updated. From the Contents: Introduction Liquid Surfaces Thermodynamics of Interfaces Charged Interfaces and the Electric Double Layer Surface Forces Contact Angle Phenomena and Wetting Solid Surfaces Adsorption Surface Modification Friction, Lubrication, and Wear Surfactants, Micelles, Emulsions, and Foams Thin Films on Surfaces of Liquids Solutions to Exercises Analysis of Diffraction Patterns

This graduate-level textbook covers the major developments in surface sciences of recent decades, from experimental tricks and basic techniques to the latest experimental methods and theoretical understanding. It is unique in its attempt to treat the physics of surfaces, thin films and interfaces, surface chemistry, thermodynamics, statistical physics and the physics of the solid/electrolyte interface in an integral manner, rather than in separate compartments. It is designed as a handbook for the researcher as well as a study-text for graduate students. Written explanations are supported by 350 graphs and illustrations.

Electrified interfaces span from metaVsemiconductor and metaVelectrolyte interfaces to disperse systems and biological membranes, and are notably important in so many physical, chemical and biological systems that their study has been tackled by researchers with different scientific backgrounds using different methodological approaches. The various electrified interfaces have several common features. The equilibrium distribution of positive and negative ions in an electrolytic solution is governed by the same Poisson-Boltzmann equation independent of whether the solution comes into contact with a metal, a colloidal particle or a biomembrane, and the same is true for the equilibrium distribution of free electrons and holes of a semiconductor in contact with a different conducting phase. Evaluation of electric potential differences across biomembranes is based on the same identity of electrochemical potentials which holds for a glass electrode and which yields the Nernst equation when applied to a metal/solution interface. The theory of thermally activated electron tunneling, which was developed by Marcus, Levich, Dogonadze and others to account for electron transfer across metaVelectrolyte interfaces, is also applied to light induced charge separation and proton translocation reactions across intercellular membranes. From an experimental viewpoint, the same electrochemical and in situ spectroscopic techniques can equally well be employed for the study of apparently quite different electrified interfaces.

Optics And Spectroscopy At Surfaces And Interfaces written by Vladimir G. Bordo and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-07-11 with Science categories.

This book covers linear and nonlinear optics as well as optical spectroscopy at solid surfaces and at interfaces between a solid and a liquid or gas. The authors give a concise introduction to the physics of surfaces and interfaces. They discuss in detail physical properties of solid surfaces and of their interfaces to liquids and gases and provide the theoretical background for understanding various optical techniques. The major part of the book is dedicated to a broad review on optical techniques and topical applications such as infrared and optical spectroscopy or optical microscopy. Discussions of nonlinear optics, but also nano-optics and local spectroscopy complement this self-contained work. Helpful features include about 50 problems with solutions, a glossary and a thoroughly elaborated list of topical references. The book is suited as a text for graduate students but also for scientists working in physics, chemistry, materials or life sciences who look for an expert introduction to surface optical aspects of their studies.

Advanced Materials Interfaces written by Ashutosh Tiwari and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-22 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Advanced Material Interfaces is a state-of-the-art look at innovative methodologies and strategies adopted for interfaces and their applications. The 13 chapters are written by eminent researchers not only elaborate complex interfaces fashioned of solids, liquids, and gases, but also ensures cross-disciplinary mixture and blends of physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering and life sciences. Advanced interfaces operate fundamental roles in essentially all integrated devices. It is therefore of the utmost urgency to focus on how newly-discovered fundamental constituents and interfacial progressions can be materialized and used for precise purposes. Interfaces are associated in wide multiplicity of application spectrum from chemical catalysis to drug functions and the advancement is funnelled by fine-tuning of our fundamental understanding of the interface effects.

Mechanics Of Solid Interfaces written by Muriel Braccini and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-21 with Science categories.

The growing occurrence of heterogeneous materials such as composites or coated substrates in structural parts makes it necessary for designers and scientists to deal with the specific features of the mechanical behavior of solid interfaces. This book introduces basic concepts on mechanical problems related to the presence of solid/solid interfaces and their practical applications. The various topics discussed here are the mechanical characterization of interfaces, the initiation and growth of cracks along interfaces, the origin and control of interface adhesion, focusing in particular on thin films on substrate systems. It is designed and structured to provide a solid background in the mechanics of heterogeneous materials to help students in materials science, as well as scientists and engineers.

Interface Science And Composites written by Soo-Jin Park and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-18 with Science categories.

The goal of Interface Science and Composites is to facilitate the manufacture of technological materials with optimized properties on the basis of a comprehensive understanding of the molecular structure of interfaces and their resulting influence on composite materials processes. From the early development of composites of various natures, the optimization of the interface has been of major importance. While there are many reference books available on composites, few deal specifically with the science and mechanics of the interface of materials and composites. Further, many recent advances in composite interfaces are scattered across the literature and are here assembled in a readily accessible form, bringing together recent developments in the field, both from the materials science and mechanics perspective, in a single convenient volume. The central theme of the book is tailoring the interface science of composites to optimize the basic physical principles rather than on the use of materials and the mechanical performance and structural integrity of composites with enhanced strength/stiffness and fracture toughness (or specific fracture resistance). It also deals mainly with interfaces in advanced composites made from high-performance fibers, such as glass, carbon, aramid, and some inorganic fibers, and matrix materials encompassing polymers, carbon, metals/alloys, and ceramics. Includes chapter on the development of a nanolevel dispersion of graphene particles in a polymer matrix Focus on tailoring the interface science of composites to optimize the basic physical principles Covers mainly interfaces in advanced composites made from high performance fibers
