Physics at the beginning of the twenty-first century has reached new levels of accomplishment and impact in a society and nation that are changing rapidly. Accomplishments have led us into the information age and fueled broad technological and economic development. The pace of discovery is quickening and stronger links with other fields such as the biological sciences are being developed. The intellectual reach has never been greater, and the questions being asked are more ambitious than ever before. Physics in a New Era is the final report of the NRC's six-volume decadal physics survey. The book reviews the frontiers of physics research, examines the role of physics in our society, and makes recommendations designed to strengthen physics and its ability to serve important needs such as national security, the economy, information technology, and education.

Experimental political science has changed. In two short decades, it evolved from an emergent method to an accepted method to a primary method. The challenge now is to ensure that experimentalists design sound studies and implement them in ways that illuminate cause and effect. Ethical boundaries must also be respected, results interpreted in a transparent manner, and data and research materials must be shared to ensure others can build on what has been learned. This book explores the application of new designs; the introduction of novel data sources, measurement approaches, and statistical methods; the use of experiments in more substantive domains; and discipline-wide discussions about the robustness, generalizability, and ethics of experiments in political science. By exploring these novel opportunities while also highlighting the concomitant challenges, this volume enables scholars and practitioners to conduct high-quality experiments that will make key contributions to knowledge.

The ability is see is fundamental to our very existence. How true our perceptions really are depends upon many factors, and not least is our understanding of what light is and how it interacts with matter. It was said that the camera, the icon of light recording instruments, never lies, and in the day of the glass plate and celluloid roll-film this might well have been true. But in this modern era, with electronic cameras and computer software, it is often safe to assume that the camera always lies. The advertising images that bombard our every waking moment are manipulated in shape, profile, color, and form. In this new era, light can be manipulated with metamaterials to make one object look like another or even cause that objects to vanish, literally before our eyes; not only can the image we see be manipulated, but so can the light itself.

During August 1988. a group of 67 physicists from 45 laboratories in 17 countries met in Erice for the 26th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were: Australia. Austria. Canada. China. Czechoslovakia. Denmark. France. Federal Republic of Germany. India. Italy. Poland. Portugal. Spain. Sweden. Switzerland. United Kingdom. and the United States of America. The School was sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS). the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI). the Sicilian Regional Government (ERS). and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The interest in the Superworld is still very high. This is why. for the third year. the Erice School has been devoted. to a great extent. to review the many developments in Superstring. Supermembranes with their problems of quantization and compactification. All these theoretical speculations are very far from the experimental frontier. In order to keep our feet on the ground. a series of lectures was included to cover the status of CP violation. of the Heavy Leptons. together with the projects for new physics at Gran Sasso and Fermi Lab. For completeness. Julian Schwinger reviewed the great problem of Anomalies in Quantum Field Theory and Shelly Glashow gave a closing lecture on the end of Superworld. If nothing new happens. next year there will be no Superworld in Erice.
