The IAU Symposium No. 77 on "Structure and PrQperties of Nearby Galaxies" was held in Bad Miinstereifel, F. R. G., from 22 - 26 August 1977. The Symposium was financially supported by the IAU, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft a~d the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. the aim of the Symposium was to compare recent high-resolution radio continuum and HI-line results on nearby galaxies with both new and established optical material and with recent theoretical work. Over 100 astronomers actively working in these fields discussed the "state of the art" from their various points of view. The Symposium was sponsored by IAU Commissions 28 and 40. The Scientific Organizing Committee consisted of R.J. Allen (Chairman), K.C. Freeman, I.V. Gossachinski, G. Monnet, J.H. Oort, M.S. Roberts, S.E. Strom, A. Toomre and R. Wielebinski. In order to limit the scope of the Symposium the S.O.C. ruled that nearby galaxies have distances of 0.5 to about 15Mpc; consequently topics mainly concerned structural features occurring on length scales ranging roughly from 0.1 to 50 kpc.

Measuring the masses of galaxies as a function of redshift is perhaps one of the most challenging open issues in current astronomical research. Recent extragalactic research has led to many rapid advances in the ?eld. Even a suitable skeptic of certain pronouncements about the age and structure of the Universe should be pleased with the large steps that have been taken in furthering our understanding of the Universe since the early 1990’s. My personal involvement in galaxy research goes back to the 1960’s. At that point, galaxies were easily recognized and partially understood as organized c- lections of stars and gas. What their masses were presented a problem, which I supposed would just fade away. But fade it didn’t. Distant active nuclei and quasars were discovered in the mid-1960’s. A c- mon view of QSOs was that they have large redshifts, but what use are they for cosmology or normal galaxy astrophysics? I shared that conclusion. My expec- tions fell below their potential utility. In short, the Universe of our expectations rarely matches the Universe as it is discovered.

This volume is written by leading scientists in the field, who review the current state of our knowledge of tidal streams in the Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy, and in other nearby galaxies. The cosmological origins of dwarf galaxies and the physical processes by which they are tidally disrupted into streams and incorporated into galaxy halos are discussed. The techniques that have been used to identify tidal streams are presented and will be useful to researchers who would like to find substructures in the next generation of optical sky surveys, including Pan-STARRS and LSST. The methods that are currently under development to constrain both large scale distribution of dark matter in the Milky Way and the (small scale) lumpiness of the dark matter distribution are also explained. The authors also provide motivation for future spectroscopic surveys of Milky Way halo stars, which will aid both in the identification of tidal streams and the constraint of dark matter properties. This volume is aimed at graduate students who are beginning this field of research, but is also a resource for researchers who study tidal streams and related fields.
