The plant cell wall plays a vital role in almost every aspect of plant physiology. New techniques in spectroscopy, biophysics and molecular biology have revealed the extraordinary complexity of its molecular architecture and just how important this structure is in the control of plant growth and development. The Second Edition of this accessible and integrated textbook has been revised and updated throughout. As well as focusing on the structure and function of plant cell walls the book also looks at the applications of this research. It discusses how plant cell walls can be exploited by the biotechnology industry and some of the main challenges for future research. Key topics include: architecture and skeletal functions of the wall; cell-wall formation; control of cell growth; role in intracellular transport; interactions with other organisms; cell-wall degradation; biotechnological applications of cell-walls; role in diet and health. This textbook provides a clear, well illustrated introduction to the physiology and biochemistry of plant cell walls which will be invaluable to upper level undergraduate and post graduate students of plant physiology, plant pathology, plant biotechnology and biochemistry.

We have sought in this book to present a series of portraits of the plant cell wall as it participates in various different aspects of the life of the plant cell. Hardly any event in the cell's life occurs without involving the wall in some way, and as a result the book covers almost every aspect of plant cell biology, albeit from a special point of view. In presenting the various portraits, we have tried to show how the biochemistry, physiology and fine structure combine to give a full picture. In many cases, however, cell-wall research has not progressed far enough to give a complete picture, and numerous gaps remain. We are most grateful to Mike Black and John Chapman for inviting us to write this book and for their advice; to Clem Earle for his encouragement and help; to Dr P.M. Dey for his helpful comments; to the many contributors of photographs and diagrams; to Ros Brett, for taking more than her share of the parenting while writing was in progress; and, most especially, to Su Waldron for doing all the work on the word processor.

Plant cell walls are complex, dynamic cellular structures essential for plant growth, development, physiology and adaptation. Plant Cell Walls provides an in depth and diverse view of the microanatomy, biosynthesis and molecular physiology of these cellular structures, both in the life of the plant and in their use for bioproducts and biofuels. Plant Cell Walls is a textbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, as well as a professional-level reference book. Over 400 drawings, micrographs, and photographs provide visual insight into the latest research, as well as the uses of plant cell walls in everyday life, and their applications in biotechnology. Illustrated panels concisely review research methods and tools; a list of key terms is given at the end of each chapter; and extensive references organized by concept headings provide readers with guidance for entry into plant cell wall literature. Cell wall material is of considerable importance to the biofuel, food, timber, and pulp and paper industries as well as being a major focus of research in plant growth and sustainability that are of central interest in present day agriculture and biotechnology. The production and use of plants for biofuel and bioproducts in a time of need for responsible global carbon use requires a deep understanding of the fundamental biology of plants and their cell walls. Such an understanding will lead to improved plant processes and materials, and help provide a sustainable resource for meeting the future bioenergy and bioproduct needs of humankind.

International Series of Monographs on Pure and Applied Biology: The Plant Cell Wall, Volume 2 is a four-chapter text that covers the botanical aspects of cell wall. This book specifically discusses the cell types and cell walls in vascular plants, as well as the classification and constitution of cell wall. This book deals first with the fractionation, biosynthesis, components, formation regulation, and breakdown of cell wall. These topics are followed by discussions on cell wall polysaccharides, lignin structures, cell wall changes during cell growth, and the analysis of the wall-lysing enzymes. Other chapters examine the types and chemical components of cell wall carbohydrates and the surface processes in lignin polymer formations. A study of the phylogenetic aspects of lignins and lignin synthesis is presented. A chapter is devoted to the classification and features of plant species. The remaining chapter focuses on the non-vascular plants, protista, and metazoa. The book can provide useful information to scientists, botanists, students, and researchers.

The functional significance of cell walls in many seemingly disparate branches of biology has recently been recognized. Here Fry (plant biochem, U. of Edinburgh) uses bench-top detail in outlining methods available to answer biological questions of current interest. Each chapter summarizes present knowledge of the subject and its significance, and then displays methods of analysis in table form. Acidic paper. Plant cell walls have been relevant for human survival throughout evolution, from cell walls recognised as an essential ingredient in human and livestock nutrition, to their use in energy generation, construction, tool making, paper and clothing. This plant-generated material is at the centre of a myriad of human activities, and it represents the world's most abundant natural resource for fuel, fibre, food and fodder. Plant Cell Walls: Research Milestones and Conceptual Insights provides an overview of the key discoveries of hundreds of years of plant cell wall research. With chapter contributions from prominent scientists in the cell wall field, this book provides a comprehensive treatment of plant cell wall research, accompanied by a historical overview to illustrate how concepts have evolved, and how progress has been enabled by emerging technological advances. Plant Cell Walls: Research Milestones and Conceptual Insights elaborates on the translation of research to application in biotechnology and agriculture, and highlights its relevance for climate change mitigation and adaptation. It will be a key resource for plant cell biologists, biochemists and geneticists.
