Thinking quantitatively about physiology is difficult for many students. However, it is fundamentally important for students to gain a proper understanding of many of the concepts involved. In this enlarged second edition of his popular textbook, Richard Burton gives the reader an opportunity to develop a feel for values such as ion concentrations, lung and fluid volumes, and blood pressures through the use of calculations requiring little more than simple arithmetic. The book provides guidance on how to avoid errors and the usefulness of approximation and "back-of-envelope sums." The topics discussed here include energy metabolism, nerve and muscle, blood and the cardiovascular system, respiration, renal function, body fluids, and acid-base balance. This book is essential reading for physiology students (and teachers) everywhere, both those who are shy or adept with numbers.

A&P may be complicated, but learning it doesn't have to be! Anatomy & Physiology, 11th Edition uses a clear, easy-to-read approach to tell the story of the human body's structure and function. Color-coded illustrations, case studies, and Clear View of the Human Body transparencies help you see the "Big Picture" of A&P. To jump-start learning, each unit begins by reviewing what you have already learned and previewing what you are about to learn. Short chapters simplify concepts with bite-size chunks of information. - Conversational, storytelling writing style breaks down information into brief chapters and chunks of information, making it easier to understand concepts. - 1,400 full-color photographs and drawings bring difficult A&P concepts to life and illustrate the most current scientific knowledge. - UNIQUE! Clear View of the Human Body transparencies allow you to peel back the layers of the body, with a 22-page, full-color insert showing the male and female human body along several planes. - The Big Picture and Cycle of Life sections in each chapter help you comprehend the interrelation of body systems and how the structure and function of these change in relation to age and development. - Interesting sidebars include boxed features such as Language of Science and Language of Medicine, Mechanisms of Disease, Health Matters, Diagnostic Study, FYI, Sport and Fitness, and Career Choices. - Learning features include outlines, key terms, and study hints at the start of each chapter. - Chapter summaries, review questions, and critical thinking questions help you consolidate learning after reading each chapter. - Quick Check questions in each chapter reinforce learning by prompting you to review what you have just read. - UNIQUE! Physiology Of Ticks written by Frederick D. Obenchain and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Science categories.

Physiology of Ticks focuses on the unique (and probably the most vulnerable) features of tick physiology and the physiological aspects of tick interactions with their hosts. The mechanisms used by non-feeding ticks to maintain their water balance are examined, along with the salivary mechanisms used by feeding ixodid ticks for excreting the enormous excess volumes of water and salts taken in during blood sucking. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with a description of the morphology, deposition, and components of the tick cuticle. The discussion then turns to humidity relationships and water balance of ticks, as well as the sensory basis of tick feeding behavior and the immunological basis of host resistance to ticks. Subsequent chapters explore blood digestion in ticks; tick reproduction, with emphasis on sperm development, cytogenetics, oogenesis, and oviposition; effects of insect hormones and their mimics on tick development and reproduction; and the mechanisms of tick pheromones. The final chapter deals with diapause and biological rhythms in ticks. This monograph will be of value to entomologists, physiologists, biologists, and practitioners of tropical science.

adjustment to the many dramatic changes which have occurred in the last quarter century. On the whole I feel well pleased with the present status of the Society and believe that it is well prepared to cope with all the problems which may come be fore it. We should remember, however, that the Society is not an end in itself but exists only to serve the physiological sciences, and the most important way to do this is for each member to make his own contribution to his science as effective and illuminating as possible, whether it be in teaching or research. No scientific society can professionally be better than the members of which it is composed. Compared to the maintenance of this standard of excellence, all administrative disputes within the Society pale into insignificance. The important effort must be to make sure that the American Physiological Society is not outranked in high scientific quality by any other similar group. Without this high quality, the recruitment of graduate students will be a problern in spite of all the career brochures or other publicity devices that money can buy. More Nobel Prizes in Physiology offer the surest guarantee for the future of the Society and emphasis in the next quarter century should be put on activities that best serve that objective.
