This textbook provides ample opportunities for practice and real experimental demonstrations. Conceptual understanding and mastering key techniques are enhanced by rigorous derivations, numerous worked examples, more than 300 exercises, about 150 problems and 16 computer codes. The preface summarizes all of the key concepts and formulas, along with a detailed schedule for teaching. The first three chapters introduce the quantum idea, wave-particle duality, operators and measurement. The Noether theorem is invoked to introduce the Schrödinger equation, followed by applications to infinite and finite quantum wells, quantum tunneling, harmonic oscillators, Heisenberg equation of motion, uncertainty principle, blackbody radiation and photoelectric effect. Chapters 4 and 5 are on angular momentum, the hydrogen atom and time-independent approximate methods. Chapters 6 and 7 are on spin and time-dependent perturbation theory. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 are on molecular orbitals, energy bands, quantum transport, scanning tunneling microscopy, lattice vibrations, Berry phase and quantum computing. The book is intended for a one-semester or one-year course and is also appropriate for researchers in related fields.

Physlet Physics 3E: Volume II contains a collection of exercises spanning the introductory physics sequence. These exercises use computer animations generated in JavaScript applets to show physics content on desktop and laptop computers. We call these Java applets Physlets (Physics content simulated with JavaScript applets written at Davidson College). Every chapter of Physlet Physics contains three quite different Physlet-based exercises: Illustrations, Explorations, and Problems. Illustrations are designed to demonstrate physical concepts. Explorations are tutorial in nature. Problems are interactive versions of the kind of exercises typically assigned for homework. This electronic book contains the narrative to all 800 exercises and links to the interactive content. The interactive content requires a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone and a JavaScript-enabled browser to run. The first edition of Physlet Physics was an interactive book and CD for the teaching of introductory modern physics and quantum mechanics on the college level. Physlet Physics was originally published as part of Prentice Hall’s Series in Educational Innovation. The second edition of Physlet Physics represented a major change in how the 800 Physlet-based interactive materials were delivered to teachers and students alike. Instead of accessing materials off of the CD that came with the first edition, accessed the Physlet Physics 2E AAPT ComPADRE site via a Java-enabled browser on desktop and laptop computers. For the third edition of Physlet Physics, all applets are now JavaScript and can be accessed on any device and browser via links in this book or directly at http://compadre.org/physlets/. The JavaScript-based materials described in this book run on tablets and phones, as well as desktop and laptop computers.

This book contains the transcripts of the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced study Institute on "Computational Techniques in Quantum Chemistry and Molecular Physics", held at Ramsau, Germany, 4th - 21st Sept. 1974. Quantum theory was developed in the early decades of this century and was first applied to problems in chemistry and molecular physics as early as 1927. It soon emerged however, that it was impossible to con sider any but the simplest systems in any quantita tive detail because of the complexity of Schrodinger's equation which is the basic equation for chemical and molecular physics applications. This remained the si tuation until the development, after 1950, of elec tronic digital computers. It then became possible to attempt approximate solutions of Schrodinger's equa tion for fairly complicated systems, to yield results which were sufficiently accurate to make comparison with experiment meaningful. Starting in the early nineteen sixties in the United States at a few centres with access to good computers an enormous amount of work went into the development and implementation of schemes for approximate solu tions of Schrodinger's equation, particularly the de velopment of the Hartree-Fock self-consistent-field scheme. But it was soon found that the integrals needed for application of the methods to molecular problems are far from trivial to evaluate and cannot be easily approximated.
