Exploring phytochemistry and the treatment of neurological disorders, this research topic addresses CNS disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which lack effective treatments. A key area of research in this context is plants used in traditional and local medical systems. The research topic merges ancient herbal traditions with modern science, aiming to develop groundbreaking treatments for debilitating CNS conditions. Plant and fungal metabolites known for their neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, offer promising therapeutic strategies. Advances in understanding their molecular mechanisms could offer novel therapeutic options for treating such neurological disorders. Therefore this research topic explores the research themes linking ethnopharmacology and neuropharmacology. By integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary scientific techniques, studying plant and fungal extracts and individual metabolites could transform global treatment approaches for CNS disorders. We envision that these contributions will improve the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders by harnessing the therapeutic potential of phytochemicals and that they will contribute to a better understanding of existing treatments using plant and fungal extracts. It addresses significant challenges posed by neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic injuries, and strokes, characterized by complex pathologies and limited effective treatments. By exploring the mechanisms, bioavailability, and safety profiles of such extracts and metabolites, along with potential synergies with existing therapies, this research seeks to bridge the gap between traditional and modern medical practices. Advances in analytical technologies, molecular biology, and clinical methodologies facilitate precise identification, isolation, and evaluation of these compounds. The initiative encourages collaborative research spanning molecular studies to clinical trials. This effort underscores the critical role of plant-derived compounds in neurotherapy and promotes their further exploration and application. The Research Topic encompasses exploring medicinal plants and fungi for the treatment of CNS disorders, conducting mechanistic studies on metabolites' interactions with the CNS, and clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of such preparations. These essential components aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how plant-derived compounds can play a crucial role in Neurotherapy, paving the way for innovative treatments and improved outcomes for individuals grappling with CNS-related conditions. • Discovery of new metabolites or chemically well-characterised (special) extracts for treating CNS disorder. • Advances in drug delivery systems to enhance the bioavailability and therapeutic impact of chemically well-defined extracts and metabolites. • Exploration of the molecular mechanisms of such metabolites and extracts and their interactions with the CNS. • Clinical or pre-clinical studies on such preparations. Please note: All contributions to this Research Topic must follow the guidelines listed in this section: • Please self-assess your MS using the ConPhyMP tool, and follow the standards established in the ConPhyMP statement Front. Pharmacol. 13:953205.’ WITH ‘Please self-assess your MS using the ConPhyMP tool, and follow the standards established in the ConPhyMP statement Front. Medicinal Plant Research in Africa, second edition is an updated and complete reference on the pharmacology of most relevant African species and their phytochemical properties. Although pharmacopoeias of most African countries are available and contain an impressive number of medicinal plants used for various therapeutic purposes, however there was no global standard book on the nature and specificity of chemicals isolated in African medicinal plants. This book has set the standard when it first published in 2013 and now is updated with novel phytochemicals belonging to diverse classes of terpenoids, phenolics, and alkaloids. The first chapter cover monoterpenes and related phytochemicals and is followed by sesquiterpenes on chapter two. Chapter tri reviews diterpenoids and chapter four provides an overview of triterpenes and steroids. Essential oils, simple phenols, phenolic acids and related esters come next in chapters five and six, respectively. The following chapters cover coumarins, flavonoids, quinones, xanthones, lignans and stilbenes. Tannins, alkaloids, and ceramides. Chapters 15 to 20 focus on specific health conditions starting with antibiotic infection, antimalarial and other antiprotozoal diseases, cytotoxic and anticancer activity, anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, antidiabetic botanicals and the applications of African plant phytochemicals on reproductive, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems conditions. The final chapter covers the market and industry updates since the first edition published. "Medicinal Plant Research in Africa, 2 Ed." provides a complete overview of the main phytochemical principles present in the African flora and their pharmaceutical use. Pharmaceutical scientists, Ethnopharmacists, botanists, and medicinal chemists will benefit from the content organization and the inclusion of the most recent methods for structural identification of phytochemicals, pharmacological techniques, and data interpretation. - Covers novel chemical structures, and new pharmacological data - Highlights how phytochemicals can help overcome drug resistance - Provides updated methods for structural identification of phytochemicals, pharmacological techniques, and data interpretation

In 1860, Oliver Wendell Holmes pointedly expressed himself to the Massachusetts Medical Society: “I firmly believe that if the whole Material Medica, as now used, could be sunk to the bottom of the sea, it would be all the better for mankind, and all the worst for the fishes.” Should one think the same about the current approach in drug discovery from plants? Probably yes. Despite the spending of billions of US dollars, and three decades of efforts, high-throughput screenings have only allowed the discovery of a couple of drugs. One could have reasonably expected the discovery of an arsenal of drugs from the millions of plant extracts randomly tested, but “hits” can be inactive in vitro or too toxic, some molecules need to be metabolized first to be active, and false-positive and false-negative results are common. The bitter truth is that the robotic approach in discovering drugs from plants has proven, to date, its inability to excavate the hundreds of molecules that will contribute to the health progress of Man. However, one can reasonably see that the last patches of primary rainforest on earth hold still hundreds of spectacularly active drugs that await discovery.
