Neben dem Werk wird auch auf die entsprechenden Einflüsse, die in seiner Entstehung auf es selbst und Picasso wirkten, eingegangen, aber auch auf die Wirkungen, die es in der Folge seiner Präsentation auf andere ausübte. Zudem soll seine Rolle in der expliziten Entstehung des Kubismus betrachtet werden und in wie weit das Gemälde als Vorstoß Picassos in eine neue Stilrichtung und die Moderne gesehen werden kann. Der 1881 geborene Picasso gilt in seinem Kunstschaffen als Maler, Graphiker und Bildhauer als einer der bedeutendsten Künstler des 20 Jahrhunderts. Mit seinen Werken soll er die Moderne mitgeformt oder gar heraufbeschworen haben. Als grundlegender Einfluss steht im Mittelpunkt dieser Debatte Picassos 1907 gemaltes Bild "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon". Als schockierendes und rätselhaftes Bildnis scheint es die Traditionen der Kunstgeschichte in Frage zu stellen. Zunächst von der Öffentlichkeit verborgen gilt es heute neben Guernica als eines von zwei Schlüsselwerken Picassos. Markiert es zum einen den endgültigen Ausbruch Picassos aus dem naturalistischen Darstellen und wird es vielfach auch als Startpunkt des Kubismus genannt.
