Struggling with old age, ninety-four-year-old Toby Mitchell gives a moving account of his life. Taken back to 1935 and against the backdrop of a small country town, Toby shares the bond he has with his older brother, Bill. When the tide of rejection sweeps across the tiny town because of their mother's illness, they gather the strength to push through those prejudice moments. Their brotherhood is soon tested when they both fall in love with the same girl, Hildy, a socialite from a wealthy, prominent family. Even though she is from a different world, Hildy accepts the boys and is swept up into their simple way of life. That is until one life-altering day changes everything. Devasting circumstances tear them apart. Over the years, Toby's love for Hildy refuses to fade. The events of that awful day still haunt him. In desperation he flees the only home he has ever known. As time passes, he soon discovers the new life is not what he hoped for and begins to question everything, including the love he still feels for Hildy. Amid the darkness, Toby finds in his new world, he comes to realise the emotional journey was all worth it.

Many of us have stopped to pick wildflowers or have admired them as they flourished in fields and along hiking trails and roads. Always appreciated, but not always recognized, these beauties can now be identified with Wildflowers in the Field and Forest, the most inclusive field guide available to the wildflowers of the Northeastern United States. Designed for easy use, the book features two-page spreads with descriptive text and range maps on the left page and color photos on the right. The descriptions are concise, but thorough, and the range maps show both where the plant grows and at what time of year it is likely to be in bloom. Plants are grouped by flower color, usually the feature first noticed by the observer. The species are subsequently grouped by leaf arrangement, type of leaves, and number of flower parts as indicated in the "quick characters" box at the top of each page. There is also a simple key in the beginning of the book that allows one to quickly narrow the search to a few pages. In addition to the more common and conspicuous wildflowers, many of the lesser known, and often overlooked, species are depicted. Over 1400 species are described with nearly all of them illustrated with full-color photos. While these photos generally show the flowers of the plant, insets of leaves and occasionally fruits are often included as well. A bar on each photo allows users to accurately judge the actual size of each flower. Both serious botanists and casual nature observers will welcome this beautifully photographed and expertly detailed guide.

I loved it right from the start. The love between Hildy and Toby is beautiful. There are parts that will have you crying, no let me rephrase that, sobbing so much you have to put it down because you are heartbroken. "Wildflowers," is a riveting tale that deftly portrays everyday life in a small American mill town and the abuse of child laborers at the end of the nineteenth century. Eleven-year-old Hillary Cook and her widowed mother, Laura, must both work to survive. Hillary works twelve hours a day, six days a week at the Alton Textile Mill. On Sunday afternoons, she and her two friends pick flowers, dream and play pretend in the nearby countryside. The girls pledge to be friends for eternity and call themselves "wildflowers." In this difficult world, innocent children are forced to operate dangerous machinery at the mill and even darker abuses are committed against them. Mill owner Frank Dragus has young girls sent to his office for whatever he pleases-and he is interested in Hillary. When tragedy befalls Hillary and her mother, Hillary is forced into a situation that may have disastrous consequences . From busy factory floors and bustling portside pubs to tragedy, murder, and intrigue, "Wildflowers" integrates the nostalgia of historical fiction with the wit of modern-day drama.

A stunning, modern reimagining of Thumbelina with an environmental message from the author/illustrator of The Book of Selkie and She Dreams of Sable Island. You cannot own a wildflower. An old woman's wish for a child is granted in the form of a thumb-sized girl born inside a flower. Though the child brings the woman much joy, Wildflower cannot be planted in one place; she must go where the wild wind blows. And if her mother really loves her, she must let her go. In Wildflower, artist Briana Corr Scott (The Book of Selkie) brings her whimsical illustrations and gentle poetry to the beloved Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, Thumbelina. Maintaining the original spirit of Andersen's tale, celebrating love between mother and child, kinship between humans and animals, and bravery--no matter your size or shape--this refreshing retelling gives newfound agency to Wildflower, and offers young readers a tender lesson about the importance of respecting nature. Wildflower is the perfect gift for new mothers and mothers-to-be, recent graduates, and anyone with a love and appreciation for nature.

A fascinating look at the myths, folklore and botany behind over 70 British wildflowers. From hedgerows to meadows, wildflowers can be found throughout our green and pleasant land. In this book, journalist and garden writer Rosamond Richardson traces the history and myths behind each flower to discover the fascinating ways in which the plants were used. Discover which flower used as a medieval lie-detector to test the innocence of suspected criminals, or stuffed in the shoes of Roman centurions to prevent damage to their feet as they marched. From periwinkles, beloved of Chaucer, and the oxlips and ‘nodding violet’ growing in the forest of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the book celebrates the important role wildflowers have played in literature, as well as their uses in food and medicine, and the history, myths and tales behind each species. The nineteenth-century poet John Clare wrote, ‘I love wildflowers (none are weeds with me)'. This book is a celebration of the bountiful history behind Britain’s beloved wildflowers and is perfect for anyone with an interest in gardening, history or the natural world.
