Have you ever wondered why you are where you are in life? Many times the question that is asked is "How did I get here?" Someone once said, that where you are in life is the sum total of the decisions you have made. I personally believe that there is a great amount of validity to that observation, but I don't believe that it applies to everyone. I say that because I had a life plan and a life goal. I followed that plan and tried to reach my goal with diligence, but in the midst of my efforts I could feel something and even someone changing my plans and pointing me in a different direction. I titled this book "Pieces of my Puzzle" because for a large portion of my life I struggled in my mind to make sense of the chapters and episodes of my earthly experience until I realized that no single part of my journey was meant to define my entire existence. I finally understood that the many pieces of my life are parts of a collective body that's designed to eventually make one big picture. For those of you who are reading this book perhaps you have encountered the same mind battles as I have. Maybe you are in a state of "pieces". I say pieces because that's how life unfolds, it plays out in increments. The tricky part is that these pieces can often cause you to become puzzled about life. They often look like something they are not, but they can also not look like what they absolutely are. Sounds crazy huh? Well that's what I felt like at times while going through the transitions that you are going to read about in this book. It is my desire that as you read my story you will come to a greater understanding of your own. This book only encapsulates a portion of my life. Writing became a cathartic experience for Karen Wielinski as a means to process a devastating tragedy. Her first book, "One on the Ground", told compelling story of how her world was changed forever when Continental Flight 3407 crashed into her home taking 51 souls with it. This book, "Pieces of My Puzzle", flows naturally from "One on the Ground". It explores Karen's life journey through the '50s, '60s, 70s and beyond. The Wielinskis were a family of puzzlers. Her husband, Doug, was probably working on a puzzle in another room when a commercial airliner crashed into their house and exploded into flame. Doug died in that crash. Miraculously, Karen and her youngest daughter who were home that night managed to escape. "Pieces of My Puzzle" gives insight into Buffalo and Western New York history through her unique perspective. These are stories of a small child growing up on the East Side, where she was surrounded by a large extended family and a community that found its nucleus in St. Mary of Sorrows Parish. The five senses of touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell play an important role in developing Karen's puzzle. She blends a mix of 250 photos, a few original poems, a series of essays, and even a selection of family recipes. Karen believes that these essays, photos, poems, and recipes demonstrate the way she has discovered, cultivated, lost, and rearranged her puzzle pieces throughout the years.
