The French of Algeria, as they are commonly called today, remain a distinct yet waning subculture. Aspects of their lives continue to provide fertile ground for the media, including, most recently a widely published discussion of the use of torture and murder by French generals during the Algerian War (1955-1962). Publications continue to proliferate on all aspects and from all sides of the French Algerian experience as the time passed permits unprecedented examination of this controversial period in history from 1830 when European colonization began until today. The Pied-noirs continue to contribute to the rich multi cultural world of contemporary France but their actual experiences remain a largely taboo topic in a country, like that of the U.S. in Vietnam, hasn't fully come to terms with the scars left by colonization, settlement and ultimate defeat. This work shows the tremendous influence of Pied-noir on French local and regional elections and discusses the profound effect that the first waves of French Algerians had on the political and economic cultures of Southern France and on the civil service (particularly the gendarmarie and local administration) this group portended. Also discussed is the relationship of Algerian French to the harkis or Algerian Arab supporters of Algerie Francais. Finally the research examines the political fabric of the community and its suprising influence on both the French Left and Right.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Romance Languages - French Studies - Culture, grade: 1, University of Vienna (Institut fur Geschichte), course: World of Empires, language: English, abstract: Colonialism was one of the most violent chapters of world history. Although France has tried to hide its colonial past and for quite some time, voices remained silent. The Pieds-Noirs were nearly banished from older history books and their life was often ignored by historians. As the history of the Pieds-Noirs has been hidden for years, it is not surprising that there is only little literature about it. Most books have been published in French even though it is a topic of global interest. Therefore, it is a main goal of this paper to use sources in different languages in order to compare standpoints, to avoid a narrowed view and to allow a global perspective. It shall be pointed out that the discrimination of indigenous people by European powers did not only happen in Algeria but in many other colonies as well and that countries which got independent inspired other colonies. Contrary to many other publications, this paper will not end with the Algerian independence as the reintegration of the Pieds-Noirs in France will be examined, too. The years following the War of Independence are significant for understanding how easily powers can switch. In this respect, this paper tries to explain the development of the Pieds-Noirs comprehensively - from the beginnings in 1830 until today."

Remembering French Algeria written by Amy L. Hubbell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Literary Criticism categories.

Colonized by the French in 1830, Algeria was an important French settler colony that, unlike its neighbors, endured a lengthy and brutal war for independence from 1954 to 1962. The nearly one million Pieds-Noirs (literally “black-feet”) were former French citizens of Algeria who suffered a traumatic departure from their homes and discrimination upon arrival in France. In response, the once heterogeneous group unified as a community as it struggled to maintain an identity and keep the memory of colonial Algeria alive. Remembering French Algeria examines the written and visual re-creation of Algeria by the former French citizens of Algeria from 1962 to the present. By detailing the preservation and transmission of memory prompted by this traumatic experience, Amy L. Hubbell demonstrates how colonial identity is encountered, reworked, and sustained in Pied-Noir literature and film, with the device of repetition functioning in these literary and visual texts to create a unified and nostalgic version of the past. At the same time, however, the Pieds-Noirs’ compulsion to return compromises these efforts. Taking Albert Camus’s Le Mythe de Sisyphe and his subsequent essays on ruins as a metaphor for Pied-Noir identity, this book studies autobiographical accounts by Marie Cardinal, Jacques Derrida, Hélène Cixous, and Leïla Sebbar, as well as lesser-known Algerian-born French citizens, to analyze movement as a destabilizing and productive approach to the past.

Performing the Pied-Noir Family: Constructing Narratives of Settler Memory and Identity in Literature and On-Screen sheds new light on the memory community of the pieds-noir from the Algerian War (1954-1962) as it continues to resonate in France, where the subject was initially repressed in the collective psyche. Aoife Connolly draws on theories of performativity to explore autobiographical and fictional narratives by the settlers in over thirty canonical and non-canonical works of literature and film produced from the colony’s imminent demise up to the present day. Connolly focuses on renewed attachment to the family in exile to facilitate a comprehensive analysis of settler masculinity, femininity, childhood, and adolescence and to uncover neglected representations, including homosexual and Jewish voices. Connolly argues that findings on the construction of a post-independence identity and collective memory have broader implications for communities affected by colonization and migration. Scholars of literature, film, Francophone studies, and film studies will find this book particularly useful.

This unique cookbook relates the story of the Pied Noir or 'Black feet', Sephardic Jews from the North African nation of Algeria. The cuisine of the Peid Noir reflects a storied history: Expelled from Spain, and later forced to flee Algeria, their cookery was influenced by the nations they inhabited, as well as the trade routes that passed through these areas. Over the centuries, they collected recipes and flavours that came to form a unique and little-known culinary repertoire. The 85 recipes in this fascinating book are accompanied by a history of the Pied Noir and the story of the author's family. A glossary of culinary terms and menus for Pied Noir feasts are also included.

This book explores the memory of the war of independence in France as viewed by the former European settlers (pieds-noirs) and the harkis, those Algerians who worked for the French security forces. It examines how the memorial dynamics of the two groups are related both to each other and to other memories of the war.
