Il terzo volume della collana «ArcheoAlpMed – Archeologia delle Alpi e del Mediterraneo tardoantico e medievale», Piemonte archeo-minerario, ha l’ambizione, dichiarata già nel sottotitolo (Miniere e opifici da risorsa strategica a patrimonio storico-ambientale), di offrire al lettore un viaggio nello spazio e nel tempo. Lo spazio è quello di un Piemonte, presentato in una cartina iniziale, esaminato nella produttività metallurgica di alcune località di quattro grandi vallate: Val Grana, Val di Susa, Valli di Lanzo, Val Sessera. Il tempo è un lunghissimo arco cronologico determinato dal rinvenimento di reperti, da indagini stratigrafiche, dall’esistenza di fonti documentarie, dalla sopravvivenza di termini lessicali, dall’uso del sito come bene culturale e paesaggistico. In definitiva, con un po’ di approssimazione, potremmo dire: dalle origini, o quasi, ai nostri giorni. Il viaggiatore, per continuare nella metafora, è portato per mano fra cave e miniere disseminate nelle rappresentazioni cartografiche settecentesche o localizzabili in carte geologiche e visibili tuttora nei versanti alpini. L’apparato di immagini è perciò notevole e indispensabile, anche nel documentare quanto rimane degli oggetti di uso quotidiano, boccali, recipienti, stoviglie, che, rinvenuti sul posto di lavoro, aggiungono una connotazione sociale alla valutazione archeologica. Questo sfaccettato approccio allo studio di opifici, cave, miniere, presente in tutti i capitoli, trova forse la sua espressione più evidente nei settori dedicati alle Valli di Lanzo e alla Val Sessera, non per nulla i più corposi. In entrambi è particolarmente visibile l’articolazione del progetto d’indagine che si snoda dall’esame dei siti e dei materiali sino alla formulazione di prospettive di sviluppo culturale. È apprezzabile l’edizione di fonti medievali: i conti di castellania rivelano ancora una volta la poliedrica ricchezza di dati che, per lo studioso di oggi, va ben oltre il fine di documentazione contabile per il quale quei documenti furono prodotti. Allo stesso modo, nelle appendici documentarie settecentesche, si intravede un novello Regno di Sardegna che, dagli anni Venti del Settecento, trova in appositi apparati burocratici l’assetto di uno Stato ben organizzato. La copiosa bibliografia di riferimento dà conto del retroterra di ricerche a cui il volume si ispira. Per chi scrive, è emozionante ritrovare richiami ad Archeologia Medievale, la rivista fondata da Riccardo Francovich nel 1974, di cui non solo il sottoscritto, ma anche altri colleghi medievisti, fra i quali Aldo A. Settia, furono convinti animatori. Quella stagione di studi si ispirava alla contemporanea via intrapresa dai francesi con le loro ricerche nel settore. La lezione di Archeologia Medievale è ancora attiva: il presente volume, arricchito da orientamenti di nuove, contemporanee sensibilità, ne è la concreta e valida testimonianza. Buona lettura.
