Sein wissenschaftliches Gesamtwerk beschäftigt sich mit einer Vielfalt von Themen aus den Bereichen der Ethnologie, Soziologie, aber auch Philosophie und Politik, wodurch seine Arbeiten über die Soziologie hinaus auch in anderen Fachwissenschaften wie z. B. Geschichte, Erziehungs- oder Literaturwissenschaft oder aber auch bei einer breiten, an soziopolitischen Fragen interessierten Öffentlichkeit Beachtung fanden. BOURDIEUs soziologische Forschungsarbeit bestand überwiegend aus empirischen Studien über alltägliche Erfahrungen von Individuen, welche er in die Entwicklung seiner Theorien mit einbezog. Sein Gesamtwerk beinhaltet nicht eine "große Theorie", sondern besteht aus verschiedenen Teilkomponenten wie der Theorie der Praxis, der Habitustheorie oder der Kapitaltheorie. (vgl. SCHWINGEL 1995) Neben den Vorstellungen vom sozialen Raum, vom sozialen Feld oder dem kulturellen Kapital gehört das Habitus-Konzept zu den "zentralen Erkenntnisinstrumenten", die BOURDIEU den Sozialwissenschaften hinterlassen hat. (vgl. KRAIS / GEBAUER 2002) Mit BOURDIEUs Habitus-Theorie werde ich mich in dieser Arbeit beschäftigen. Zu Beginn werde ich zunächst einen knappen Überblick über BOURDIEUs Biografie und über seine umfangreiche soziologische Forschungsarbeit geben, um den Hintergrund der Soziologie BOURDIEUs zu umreißen.

Ich werde auf die Entstehung beziehungsweise den Entwicklungsprozess des Habitus eingehen. Als erstes werde ich Bourdieus Habitus-Theorie in einfachen Worten erklären und darstellen. Als nächstes werde ich auf den Ursprung dieser Theorie eingehen, um dann noch einmal ausführlich den Habitus in all seinen Schemata zu erläutern und zugänglich zu machen. Diesen Abschnitt werde ich dann mit einem Beispiel abschließen, hierfür habe ich den sprachlichen Habitus gewählt da ich finde, dass dieses Beispiel am anschaulichsten ist. Sprache verbindet Menschen und gibt in einem Gespräch auf vielschichtige Weise Preis mit wem man es gerade zu tun hat. Daher halte ich dieses Beispiel für sehr geeignet, um Bourdieus durchaus komplizierte Theorie zu erklären. Als nächstes werde ich die soziologischen Strukturkategorien des Habitus anschneiden. Hierfür wählte ich die Beispiele Klasse und Sozialraum. Zum Abschluss werde ich das Habitus-Konzept auf das Exzerpt des Tischgespräches einer Familie anwenden.

This book explores the thought of Pierre Bourdieu, one of the most influential sociologists of the twentieth century, proposing a modification and extension of his concept of habitus. Building on Bourdieu’s notion of the translational reproduction of social structure – the idea that while social classes move in the same direction, dominant groups are able to preserve their relative power position, thus maintaining the structure of the gap – the author proposes that as social structures change, habitus change correspondingly, and thus become plural. Informed by Norbert Elias’ process sociology, this volume offers examples of habitus pluralisation, arguing that this modification of Bourdieu’s thought renders it more suitable for the study of social changes and represents the development of a path that Bourdieu himself had begun to explore in the later stages of his career. This book is the first of three volumes of HabitusAnalysis that take the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu as a starting point to develop a methodical approach to the habitus of social actors. However, the concept of habitus and Bourdieu’s approach to language are somewhat disputed while his relationist epistemology is seldom paid tribute to. The present volume therefore in its first part deals with Bourdieu’s roots in relationist Neo-Kantian philosophy, the basic traits of his relationist sociology. The second part examines Bourdieu’s theoretical and empirical work on language before elaborating its own praxeological concept of language use that opens the road to a methodically and theoretically sound reconstruction of the habitus of social actors. In the second volume of HabitusAnalysis we will carefully re-read Bourdieu’s theory in order to develop a disposition-based theory of the habitus that emphasizes the creative potential of the linkage between mental orientations and socio-structural processes, classification and classes, as well as dispositions and positions. The method presented in the third volume will facilitate a detailed empirical analysis of the creative transformations operated by the habitus in relation with the social structures of domination and the dynamics of social differentiation.

Our usual representations of the opposition between the "civilized" and the "primitive" derive from willfully ignoring the relationship of distance our social science sets up between the observer and the observed. In fact, the author argues, the relationship between the anthropologist and his object of study is a particular instance of the relationship between knowing and doing, interpreting and using, symbolic mastery and practical masteryor between logical logic, armed with all the accumulated instruments of objectification, and the universally pre-logical logic of practice. In this, his fullest statement of a theory of practice, Bourdieu both sets out what might be involved in incorporating one's own standpoint into an investigation and develops his understanding of the powers inherent in the second member of many oppositional pairsthat is, he explicates how the practical concerns of daily life condition the transmission and functioning of social or cultural forms. The first part of the book, "Critique of Theoretical Reason," covers more general questions, such as the objectivization of the generic relationship between social scientific observers and their objects of study, the need to overcome the gulf between subjectivism and objectivism, the interplay between structure and practice (a phenomenon Bourdieu describes via his concept of the habitus), the place of the body, the manipulation of time, varieties of symbolic capital, and modes of domination.
