In "A Philosophical Essay on Probabilities," Pierre-Simon Laplace presents a foundational work that delves into the principles of probability theory and its philosophical implications. Written in 1814, this essay is characterized by Laplace's methodical literary style, integrating mathematical rigor with contemplative inquiry. Contextually, it emerged during the Enlightenment, a period marked by a growing fascination with rational thought and empirical evidence, positioning Laplace's work as a pivotal convergence of science and philosophy, where he explores the nature of uncertainty and the predictability of events through mathematical paradigms. Pierre-Simon Laplace was a prominent French mathematician and astronomer whose groundbreaking contributions helped shape modern statistics and probability theory. His background in the sciences, particularly his work in celestial mechanics, informed his profound interest in understanding chance and causality. Laplace's quest to apply deterministic insights to probabilistic situations reflects his broader philosophical engagements, particularly exemplified in his famous assertion that, given complete knowledge of a system, one could predict its future state with certainty. This seminal work is highly recommended for anyone curious about the interplay between science and philosophy. It serves as both an intellectual introduction and a comprehensive analysis of probability's implications, making it a critical read for scholars, mathematicians, and anyone interested in the foundations of rational thought and decision-making in uncertain contexts.

Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749-1827) is remembered amoung probabilitists today particularly for his "Theorie analytique des probabilites," published in 1812. The "Essai philosophique dur les probabilites" is his introduction for the second edition of this work. Here Laplace provided a popular exposition on his "Theorie." The "Essai," based on a lecture on probability given by Laplace in 1794, underwent sweeping changes, almost doubling in size, in the various editions published during Laplace's lifetime. Translations of various editions in different languages have apeared over the years. The only English translation of 1902 reads awkwardly today. This is a thorough and modern translation based on the recent re-issue, with its voluminous notes, of the fifth edition of 1826, with preface by Rene Thom and postscript by Bernard Bru. In the second part of the book, the reader is provided with an extensive commentary by the translator including valuable histographical and mathematical remarks and various proofs.

In "A Philosophical Essay on Probabilities," Pierre-Simon Laplace presents a groundbreaking analysis of probability theory that serves as the foundation for modern statistical methodologies. Written in a clear and methodical style, the essay intricately weaves together philosophical reflections and mathematical principles. Laplace not only explores the mathematical underpinnings of probability'Äîbut also delves into its implications in areas such as science, philosophy, and everyday decision-making. This work is situated in the Enlightenment context, reflecting the burgeoning interest in rational thought and empirical evidence, establishing a bridge between abstract mathematical concepts and tangible real-world applications. Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749'Äì1827) was a prominent French mathematician and astronomer whose work on celestial mechanics and probability theory significantly advanced the sciences. His upbringing in rural France amidst the dawning Age of Enlightenment instilled in him a profound appreciation for rational inquiry. Laplace's personal experiences with the unpredictable nature of life and the cosmos shaped his interest in measurement and uncertainty, making his insights all the more pertinent to the social and scientific advancements of his time. This essential text is highly recommended for scholars, mathematicians, and anyone interested in the philosophy of science. Laplace's exploration of uncertainty is not merely theoretical; it invites readers to ponder the role of chance in human existence and decision-making. His masterful synthesis of philosophy and mathematics provides an enduring framework that resonates in contemporary discussions surrounding probability and its applications.

The Taming Of Chance written by Ian Hacking and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-08-31 with Political Science categories.

In this important study Ian Hacking continues the enquiry into the origins and development of certain characteristic modes of contemporary thought undertaken in such previous works as the best-selling The Emergence of Probability. Professor Hacking shows how by the late-nineteenth century it became possible to think of statistical patterns as explanatory in themselves, and to regard the world as not necessarily deterministic in character. In the same period the idea of human nature was displaced by a model of normal people with laws of dispersion. These two parallel transformations fed into each other, so that chance made the world seem less capricious: it was legitimated because it brought order out of chaos. Combining detailed scientific historical research with characteristic philosophic breadth and verve, The Taming of Chance brings out the relations between philosophy, the physical sciences, mathematics and the development of social institutions, and provides a unique and authoritative analysis of the 'probabilisation' of the western world.

Fisher Neyman And The Creation Of Classical Statistics written by Erich L. Lehmann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-25 with Mathematics categories.

Classical statistical theory—hypothesis testing, estimation, and the design of experiments and sample surveys—is mainly the creation of two men: Ronald A. Fisher (1890-1962) and Jerzy Neyman (1894-1981). Their contributions sometimes complemented each other, sometimes occurred in parallel, and, particularly at later stages, often were in strong opposition. The two men would not be pleased to see their names linked in this way, since throughout most of their working lives they detested each other. Nevertheless, they worked on the same problems, and through their combined efforts created a new discipline. This new book by E.L. Lehmann, himself a student of Neyman’s, explores the relationship between Neyman and Fisher, as well as their interactions with other influential statisticians, and the statistical history they helped create together. Lehmann uses direct correspondence and original papers to recreate an historical account of the creation of the Neyman-Pearson Theory as well as Fisher’s dissent, and other important statistical theories.

"Here is a well-known story. Before sometime in the early modern period, Europeans believed that knowledge of nature came solely from reading books, above all those of Aristotle. Then the humanist re-discovery and translation of various ancient philosophical works led the number of "authorities" to grow, and alongside a monolithic "Aristotelianism" emerged any number of "-isms": Stoicism, Epicureanism, Platonism, Skepticism, and so on. Gradually, philosophers realized that they need not need rely on authorities at all, and began to use their own reason, coupled with experience and experiment. Scholasticism and humanism were dead, and the "Age of Reason" had begun, with Descartes as its iconoclastic father (perhaps with a little help from Bacon)"--
