The usage of piezoelectric and ferroelectric thin films is a promising approach to significantly increase the functionality of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) as well as of microelectronics in general. Since the device performance thus becomes directly connected to the properties of the functional film, new as well as improved piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials can allow substantial technological innovation. This dissertation focused on enhancing the piezoelectric properties of AlN by forming solid solutions with ScN and includes the first experimental observation of ferroelectricity in AlScN, and thus the first discovery of ferroelectricity in a III-V semiconductor based material in general. Compared to AlN, piezoelectric coefficients that are up to 450% higher were realized in AlScN, with d33f reaching a maximum of 17.2 pm/V and e31f reaching 3.2 C/m2. In this context, the identification and subsequent rectification of a major morphological instability in AlScN that becomes more pronounced with increasing Sc content was reported. Thus, films free of morphological inhomogeneities with close to ideal piezoelectric properties could be deposited up to 0.43% ScN. Control of the intrinsic film stress was demonstrated over a wide range from strongly tensile to strongly compressive for all the investigated Sc contents. The improved piezoelectric coefficients together with the possibility of stress control allowed the fabrication of suspended MEMS structures with electromechanical coupling coefficients improved by more than 320% relative to AlN. Ferroelectrictiy in AlScN was observed starting at ScN contents of 27%. Its emergence was connected to the same gradual evolution from the initial wurtzite structure to the layered hexagonal structure that also causes the enhanced piezoelectric coefficients while increasing the Sc content. Ferroelectric AlScN allowed the first experimental observation of the spontaneous polarization of the wurtzite structure and confirms that this polarization is more than one order of magnitude above most previous theoretical predictions. The large, tunable coercive fields and polarization constants together with the broad linear strain intervals, a paraelectric transition temperature above 600°C as well as the technological compatibility of the III-nitrides lead to a combination of exceptional properties that was previously inaccessible in ferroelectric thin films.

Surface Acoustic Wave Devices and Their Signal Processing Applications is a textbook that combines experiment and theory in assessing the signal processing applications of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. The operating principles of SAW devices are described from a circuit design viewpoint. This book is comprised of 18 chapters and begins with a historical background on surface acoustic waves and a discussion on the merits of SAW devices as well as their applications. The next chapter introduces the reader to the basics of acoustic waves and piezoelectricity, together with the effect of acoustic bulk waves on the performance of SAW filters. The principles of linear phase SAW filter design and equivalent circuit models for a SAW filter are then described. The remaining chapters focus on trade-offs in linear phase SAW filter design; compensation for second-order effects; harmonic SAW delay lines for gigahertz frequencies; and coding techniques using linear SAW transducers. The final chapter highlights Some other significant alternative design techniques and applications for SAW devices. This monograph will be suitable for engineering or physics students as well as engineers, scientists, and technical staff in industry who seek further information on SAW-based circuits, systems, and applications.

This book introduces acoustic wave theories using a reader-friendly matrix-based linear algebra approach. It will enable the reader to take advantage of software tools such as MATLAB (commercial codes) and OCTAVE (open-source codes) to gain better and deeper understanding of the underlying physics quickly. In this aspect, this text can be regarded as a practical introduction of the acoustic wave theories in an easy-to-follow linear algebra format using matrix manipulations instead of an abstract approach relying on tensor manipulations. The book also uses case studies to demonstrate how the fundamentals on acoustic waves discussed throughout the book are applied in device designs and analyses such that the connections and interdependences between the underlying sciences and the observed behavior and performances can be better appreciated by the reader. To achieve this, all problems for illustrations, examples, case studies, and device analyses are developed and solved based on the mathematical foundations laid out in the book.

Global population growth and tremendous economic development has brought us to the crossroads of long-term sustainability and risk of irreversible changes in the ecosystem. Energy efficient and ecofriendly technologies and systems are critically needed for further growth and sustainable development. While ceramic matrix composites were originally developed to overcome problems associated with the brittle nature of monolithic ceramics, today the composites can be tailored for customized purposes and offer energy efficient and ecofriendly applications, including aerospace, ground transportation, and power generation systems. The 9th International Conference on High Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites (HTCMC 9) was held in Toronto, Canada, June 26-30, 2016 to discuss challenges and opportunities in manufacturing, commercialization, and applications for these important material systems. The Global Forum on Advanced Materials and Technologies for Sustainable Development (GFMAT 2016) was held in conjunction with HTCMC 9 to address key issues, challenges, and opportunities in a variety of advanced materials and technologies that are critically needed for sustainable societal development. Electroacoustic transducers (EAT) are devices, which transform electric energy to energy of acoustic fluctuations. Principles of action, design of transducers for work in air and water as well as for non-destructive control are described in the book. New technologies of designing EAT, not only expanding designing possibilities, are described. They also allow to create transducers with improved characteristics. In particular, methods to increase target capacity (sound pressure), decrease working (resonant) frequency of transducers and expand frequencies of projectors and sound receivers are developed. Methods and control units of transducers in batch production of transducers are described, too.
