C.C.“Cash and Carry” Pyle made several fortunes representing professional football and tennis players—before losing everything and disappearing into history’s dustbin. This work reevaluates Pyle’s fast life and times while analyzing his extraordinary and enduring legacy. In 1925, Pyle rocked the sports world by inducing Red Grange to abandon the leafy confines of the University of Illinois for pro football, in essence thumbing his nose at protesting academics who insisted the move would irreparably harm both the college game and Grange’s career. The book continues through all of Pyle’s successes, and more than a few of his failures, including his signing of controversial French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen and his near-bankruptcy following losses incurred staging the short-lived annual Bunion Derby, as newspaper columnists dubbed the notorious 3,470-mile transcontinental footrace first held in 1928.

The Night Never Sleeps written by Brian M. Spradlin and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07 with Poetry categories.

The Night Never Sleeps is a dark and intense collection of poetry, bringing together author Brian M. Spradlin's favorite poems from his past with a voluminous amount of recent work. Filled with despair and soul-searching, both for the elements that have passed him by and for the desire to find meaning and relevance, this collection visits recurring themes of solitude, darkness, relationships, and distrust. In the selection Lament Spradlin writes about the darkness: / night shines a deadly smile at me / let the sinners roam and flee / it's in this world that i relate / to things that i've yet to create / and so the march goes on and on / as i attempt to block the sun / because brightness never has been me / let me lament to let things be. / let be. / An avid poet and songwriter for more than twenty years, Spradlin penned the bulk of the poems in the hushed cold of winter. Like the season they were written in, the feelings are sometimes frigid, but also thoughtful and provocative. In The Night Never Sleeps, Spradlin shares the demons he has conquered and the ones he has yet to vanquish.

The War is over, Britain has fallen. It wasn't necessarily that Britain had lost the Second World War. In fact, the Citizen Survivors would disagree whether they had simply bowed out, if it was still raging on somewhere else, or whether the whole thing was simply an unfortunate misunderstanding that they were better off having no part of. Citizen Survivors: The Red Book is a nightmarish black comedy, retelling history's most famous 'what if?’ - Not only what if Britain lost World War Two, but what would that mean for those who survived? The Red Book is a dystopian anthology containing eleven short stories written by ten authors. Often tragic, often spooky, often funny, but always weird. Mirroring and inspired by many historical realities and possibilities, join the Citizen Survivors as they try to piece together what has happened to their world and how they confront their new reality. The Inmate by Maryanne Coleman The Reverend by M. J. Trow The Policeman by Kyt Wright The Agent by Maryanne Coleman The Widow by Julia Cowan The Busker by Taliesin Trow The Arbitrator by Faye Irwin The Soldier by Richard Denham The Entrepreneur by Justin Alcala The Housewife by Samantha Evergreen The Partisan by Bethan White Praise for Citizen Survivors: The Red Book: ‘Psychological horror may have just found its newest champion.’ – Gillian Philip ‘It’s said that good fiction's job is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable, this book delivers that challenge in spades.’ – Georgia Hill ‘A genre-defying triumph. Franz Kafka, David Lynch and Philip K. Dick would be proud of this off-kilter anthology.’ – Russell Brown ‘Either a work of genius, a work of insanity or both! You’ll start as lost as the characters as you piece together the world of the Citizen Survivors in this unsettling and addictive read.’ – Nikki Turner ‘This book is like a good puzzle that teasingly never quite comes together, leaving you in anticipation for more clues about this nightmarish world.’ – Sarah Anne Carter

2020 Peace Corps Writers Paul Cowan Award for the Best Book of Non-Fiction On April 23, 1929, the second annual Transcontinental Foot Race across America, known as the Bunion Derby, was in its twenty-fifth day. Eddie "the Sheik" Gardner, an African American runner from Seattle, was leading the race across the Free Bridge over the Mississippi River. Along with the signature outfit that earned him his nickname—a white towel tied around his head, white shorts, and a white shirt—Gardner wore an American flag, a reminder to all who saw him run through the Jim Crow South that he was an American and the leader of the greatest footrace in the world. Kastner traces Gardner’s remarkable journey from his birth in 1897 in Birmingham, Alabama, to his success in Seattle, Washington, as one of the top long-distance runners in the region, and finally to his participation in two transcontinental footraces where he risked his life, facing a barrage of harassment for having the audacity to compete with white runners. Kastner shows how Gardner’s participation became a way to protest the endemic racism he faced, heralding the future of nonviolent efforts that would be instrumental to the civil rights movement. Shining a bright light on his extraordinary athletic accomplishments and his heroism on the dusty roads of America in the 1920s, Kastner gives Gardner and other black bunioneers the attention they so richly deserve.
