At the outset of the Second World War on September 1, 1939, young Aussie diggers are rushed to assist Britain in its hour of need to the nearest European war zone in the Middle East and North Africa. My Uncle Arthur, young Arty is one of these a sapper with 6 years militia training as an army engineer. The ANZAC forces sweep through Libya, from Egypt to Benghazi, defeating superior numbers of heavily armed Italians the first Allied land victory of the war. Ill-equipped and lacking promised supplies, the ANZACs are then inappropriately redirected from North Africa to Greece to help the Greeks face the overwhelming German advance. Retreating to Crete, Arty is captured in the Battle of Crete and becomes a POW. I am motivated to visit the conflict zones of Gallipoli and to follow my uncles wartime exploits from the time of his capture in June 1941 until his third and final escape from a German work camp in Czechoslovakia in 1945. Modern day travel makes it possible to visit not only the more recent wartime scenes of Central Europe, but also to visit the sites of classical civilizations to discover the history, art and cultures of the Mediterranean. Accompanying me on my journey is Avril who was born in England and has vivid wartime memories of the conflict from her childhood.

The open access publication of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. In Shrines in a Fluid Space: The Shaping of New Holy Sites in the Ionian Islands, the Peloponnese and Crete under Venetian Rule (14th-16th Centuries), Argyri Dermitzaki reconstructs the devotional experiences within the Greek realm of the Venetian Stato da Mar of Western European pilgrims sailing to Jerusalem. The author traces the evolution of the various forms of cultic sites and the perception of them as nodes of a wider network of the pilgrims’ ‘holy topography’. She scrutinises travelogues in conjunction with archaeological, visual and historical evidence and offers a study of the cultic phenomena and sites invested with exceptional meaning at the main ports of call of the pilgrims’ galleys in the Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese and Crete.

Archaeology of Spiritualties provides a fresh exploration of the interface between archaeology and religion/spirituality. Archaeological approaches to the study of religion have typically and often unconsciously, drawn on western paradigms, especially Judaeo-Christian (mono) theistic frameworks and academic rationalisations. The pilgrimage that I took this time was with Pilgrim Tours, and it began with a cruise on the Celestyal Olympia in the Mediterranean Sea. Sailing on the ancient sea made me think of the voyage that Odysseus took back home after the Trojan War, and it also made me think of the missionary journeys that Apostle Paul took as he embarked on the mission to bring the Christian gospel to the Greco-Roman world. This was, after all, a "traveling in the footsteps of St. Paul" trip, even though some of the places were not where he walked or taught. Nevertheless, they were places that were important in the wider context of understanding the Greco-Roman world that he was a part of. The first stop on the journey was at Mykonos, the island of the wind and windmills. The second stop--Ephesus--was an archaeological site where the ancient Temple of Artemis (Diana) stood. Patmos, the island of the Apocalypse, was where the dramatic unveiling of the book of Revelation was envisioned by the Apostle John in a natural cave. Crete, the world-renowned island of the mythical labyrinth and the Minotaur, was the center of the Minoan civilization. Santorini, also known as Thera, was, to me, the island that made me wonder about the legendary island of Atlantis. Ancient Corinth is the place where the Bible comes to life. Ancient Mycenae, although of no apparent biblical importance, is of great cultural and historical value in that it is associated with the legends of Homer. In Athens, the visit to the Parthenon atop the Acropolis is the highlight of any pilgrimage or tour. Rome, the Eternal City, is always the culmination of any pilgrimage.
