If there is one city that might be said to embody both reason and desire, it would surely be Venice: a thousand-year triumph of rational legislation, aesthetic and sensual self-expression, and self-creation--powerful, lovely, serene. Unique in so many ways, Venice is also unique in its relation to writing. London has Dickens, Paris has Balzac, Saint Petersburg has Dostoevsky, Dublin has Joyce, but there is simply no comparable writer for, or out of, Venice. Venice effectively disappeared from history altogether in 1797 after its defeat by Napoleon. From then on, it seemed to exist as a curiously marooned spectacle. Literally marooned--the city mysteriously growing out of the sea, the beautiful stone impossibly floating on water--but temporally marooned as well, stagnating outside history. Yet as spectacle, as the beautiful city par excellence, the city of art, the city as art and as spectacular example, as the greatest and richest republic in the history of the world, now declined and fallen, Venice became an important site for the European imagination. Watery, dark, silent, a place of sensuality and secrecy; of masks and masquerading; of an always possibly treacherous beauty; of Desdemona and Iago, Shylock, Volpone; of conspiracy and courtesans in Otway; an obvious setting for many Gothic novels--Venice is not written from the inside but variously appropriated from without. Venice--the place, the name, the dream--seems to lend itself to a whole variety of appreciations, recuperations, and and hallucinations. In decay and decline, yet saturated with secret sexuality--suggesting a heady compound of death and desire--Venice becomes for many writers what is was for Byron: both "the greenest island of my imagination" and a "sea-sodom." It also, as this book tries to show, plays a crucial role in the development of modern writing. Tanner skillfully lays before us the many ways in which this dreamlike city has been summoned up, depicted, dramatized--then rediscovered or transfigured in selected writings through the years.

Le jour où Pinocchio était devenu un vrai petit garçon, on s'en souvient, il s'était exclamé : " Que j'étais ridicule ; quand j'étais un pantin ! " Et Coover d'imaginer que Pinocchio avait préféré oublier son existence antérieure, pour aller vivre sa vie d'homme en Amérique. Mais si sa Fée n'avait pu se résoudre à sacrifier totalement le pantin à l'enfant, il était dit que Pinocchio reviendrait un jour vers son passé... qu'il retomberait aux mains de ses ennemis de toujours, le Chat et la Renarde, et qu'il retrouverait avec ses vieux amis Polichinelle, Colombine, Pantalone et Arlequin toute la troupe des marionnettes d'antan, revivant enfin dans Venise de picaresques aventures. Avec une éblouissante virtuosité, Robert Coover relit ce Pinocchio si parfaitement intégré à notre culture qu'on en oublie qu'il n'est pas un legs de la culture populaire, mais l'œuvre de Collodi, le mythe littéraire dominant la première moitié du XXe siècle, le mythe de l'enfance par excellence et un monument de " culture parlée ". Croce a pu écrire que " le bois dans lequel est taillé Pinocchio, c'est l'humanité ". Mais Coover nous laisse à penser que, pour atteindre à l'humanité, il ne faut peut-être pas entamer trop profondément le bois de l'enfance.

For over two hundred years, the Gothic has remained fixed in the European and American imaginations, steadily securing its position as a global cultural mode in recent decades. The globalization of Gothic studies has resulted in the proliferation of new critical concepts and a growing academic interest in the genre. Yet, despite its longevity, unprecedented expansion, and accusations of prescriptiveness, the Gothic remains elusive and without a straightforward definition. Gothic Peregrinations: The Unexplored and Re-explored Territories looks at Gothic productions largely marginalized in the studies of the genre, including the European absorption of and response to the Gothic. This collection of essays identifies landmarks and ley lines in the insufficiently probed territories of Gothic scholarship and sets out to explore its unmapped regions. This volume not only examines Gothic peregrinations from a geographical perspective but also investigates how the genre has been at odds with strict demarcation of generic boundaries. Analyzing texts which come from outside the Gothic canon, yet prove to be deeply indebted to it, like bereavement memoirs, stories produced by and about factory girls of Massachusetts, and the Mattel Monster High franchise, this volume illuminates the previously unexplored fields in Gothic studies. The chapters in this volume reveal the truly transnational expansion of the Gothic and the importance of exchange – exchange now seen not only as crucial to the genre’s gestation, or vital to the processes of globalization, but also to legitimizing Gothic studies in the global world.
