In the history of the tristate Panhandle region-the three corners of Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas-the saga of Henry C. Hitch and his ranch is also the story of the social, cultural, and economic fortunes of the region. Late in the nineteenth century James Kerrick Hitch left his home in Tennessee for the High Plains and fortune. After ten years spent working as a cowboy, he rode in to the Coldwater Creek region of No Man's Land, the fertile subirrigated valley that was to be his Promised Land. It was Henry Charles Hitch, James's son, who was to turn the valley and its uplands into an empire-raising cattle, borrowing money, going broke several times, then flourishing. Henry's genius and hard work paid off, and in time the family owned 30,000 acres of land in three states. After building their cattle empire, the Hitches moved into farming. By 1930 they had become the largest wheat producer in Oklahoma. After World War II they drilled irrigation wells and by the 1950s they had one of the first large feedlots in the region. Always willing to adopt new technology, the Henry C. Hitch Ranch became an agribusiness empire. The book is economic history-and more: it is also the absorbing story of a pioneer family. Today, Hitch Enterprises is owned and operated by the Hitch Family of Guymon, Oklahoma-the fifth generation of a family that made indelible tracks across the Panhandle. Donald E. Green, who grew up on a Texas Panhandle ranch, retired as Professor of History and Geography Central State University, Edmond, Oklahoma. He is the author of several books and many articles on the Panhandle-Plains region.

"...by turning our memory cups this way and that as we gaze into their depths, we might catch glimpses of things that were, back when the Panhandle was young." -Millie Jones Porter This revised 2nd edition of Millie Jones Porter's "Memory Cups" makes available a treasure-trove of firsthand Texas history too long out of print - a compelling portrayal of the old frontier as told by the pioneers themselves. In 1936, Porter began traveling the Texas Panhandle to sit with fellow pioneers for interviews that led to the publication in 1945 of "Memory Cups of Panhandle Pioneers" - Porter's earnest effort to record for posterity the truth of an era as she knew it. This new edition develops what was essentially a rough manuscript by imposing a sense of order and of time, correcting errors, and clearing up confusion - all to shed new light on the pioneer experience. Now portraits and Memory Cups are presented sequentially, alongside timely topics like wolf scalps, dancehall girls, cowboys, brands, and more. Porter herself is always present, shaping the discussion, adding a touch of dry humor, a thoughtful aside, or a poem. Her singular voice - shaped by a singular childhood - is expansive, discerning, and precise. In its new configuration - and with several appendixes, a thorough Bibliography, and a comprehensive Index - "Memory Cups of the Texas Panhandle" offers readers, scholars, and area genealogists the rare chance to begin in the beginning, "back when the Panhandle was young."

Minnie and Dwight, A Pioneer Love Story is an expression of praise for the many pioneer families who created community in a harsh land. Itprovides an intimate look at the history of the Texas Panhandle personalized through the eyes of my grandmother. Detailed descriptions of life from 1888- 1949 are revealed in her letters and reflections. Shining with spirit and staying power, as a pioneer entering the Panhandle of Texas in 1888 Minnie Wood Warren Hobart was physically frailer than many pioneer women. Minnie's enduring love for my grandfather sustained her through dramatic change. She grew up in Vermont - green, hilly, tranquil, with flowing water in the rivers. In 1888, she married her childhood sweetheart and moved to the Panhandle of Texas - brown, flat, windy, with sand patterns in the rivers Texas. What if she had surrendered to the strangeness that was the Texas Panhandle? Minnie matured in a cultured environment and was well educated. At twenty-nine years of age she was older than most pioneer women who headed west.

This unusual, richly illustrated guidebook details Florida's historic pioneer and cracker villages, describing the homes, work-ways and folk-ways of the states early settlers, through preserved and tangible objects and structures. Across the state, dedicated local historians and community groups have carefully preserved and moved 19th- and early 20th-century structures, including both homes and workplaces, to specially created villages in order to display the lives of Florida pioneers. The tools, houses, farms, gardens, barns, sugar and turpentine mills, churches and schools that are gathered into twenty separate sites are described here, for the first time in a single volume. Through the rich collections of household utensils, mills, and structures, the visitor can appreciate the details of the everyday life, work, hardships, and recreation of past generations of Floridians. The book is an indispensable handbook and guide for the casual or dedicated historic tourist as well as for parents and teachers seeking to expose young people to the vanishing lifestyles of Florida's pioneers. Contact information, hours, special events, and detailed descriptions of each structure at the sites provide the casual or dedicated visitor with both practical facts for arranging trips, and the specific family histories of the pioneers who built and lived in the homes.
