When the first European missionaries arrived on other continents, it was decided that the indigenous languages would be used as the means of christianization. There emerged the need to produce grammars and dictionaries of those languages. The study of this linguistic material has so far not received sufficient attention in the field of linguistic historiography. This volume is the first published collection of papers on missionary linguistics world-wide; it represents the insights of recent research, containing an introduction and papers on methodology, meta-historiography, the historical and cultural background. The book contains studies about early-modern linguistic works written in Spanish, Portuguese, English and French, describing among others indigenous languages from North America and Australia, Maya, Quechua, Xhosa, Japanese, Kapampangan, and Visaya. Etnógrafos coloniales reflexiona sobre los dispositivos de saber y las relaciones de dominación simbólica y material que se ejercieron mediante el discurso etnográfico sobre diversas etnias indígenas de la América colonial en el Caribe y en Nueva España principalmente, aunque no se limita a estos espacios geográficos. También analiza cómo y por qué se diseminan en este discurso una serie de enunciados que colaboran en la construcción de la diferencia cultural, la negación-creación de la alteridad, la producción del saber sobre el indígena y la configuración de nuevas identidades sociales y étnicas. Asimismo, el volumen explora las relaciones de instrumentalidad política (soberanía), jurídica (encomienda) y religiosa (conversión) que el discurso etnográfico del imperio español mantuvo con respecto a la justificación de la ocupación colonial y con la llamada misión civilizadora de Europa sobre la América conquistada. Se propone así un análisis de tipo interdisciplinario que estudia géneros variados (crónicas, tratados religiosos, cédulas, leyes) utilizando las herramientas metodológicas y teóricas de la crítica literaria y cultural, los estudios coloniales, el análisis del discurso y la antropología.

"In 1511, a Portuguese expedition under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque arrived on the shores of Malacca, taking control of the prosperous Malayan port-city after a swift military campaign. Portugal, a peripheral but then technologically advanced country in southwestern Europe since the latter fifteenth century, had been in the process of establishing solid outposts all along Asia’s litoral in order to participate in the most active and profitable maritime trading routes of the day. As it turned out, the Portuguese presence and influence in the Malayan Peninsula and elsewhere in continental and insular Asia expanded far beyond the sphere of commerce and extended over time well into the twenty-first century. Five hundred years later, a conference held in Singapore brought together a large group of scholars from widely different national, academic and disciplinary contexts, to analyse and discuss the intricate consequences of Portuguese interactions in Asia over the longue dure. The result of these discussions is a stimulating set of case studies that, as a rule, combine original archival and/or field research with innovative historiographical perspectives. Luso-Asian communities, real and imagined, and Luso-Asian heritage, material and symbolic, are studied with depth and insight. The range of thematic, chronological and geographic areas covered in these proceeding is truly remarkable, showing not only the extraordinary relevance of revisiting Luso-Asian interactions in the longer term, but also the surprising dynamism within an area of studies which seemed on the verge of exhaustion. Los documentos antiguos, empezando por el Nican Mopoha, han llamado al indio Juan Diego «el mensajero de Santa María»; él, a pesar de haber estado en la penumbra de los documentos históricos, continúa cumpliendo con su misión. Por ello el papa Juan Pablo II lo canonizó el 31 de julio de 2002, proponiéndolo como «evangelista y profeta» de aquel Acontecimiento, el Guadalupano, que está en el origen del proceso histórico evangelizador del Nuevo Mundo.
