Music is a human activity which involves structured and audible sounds, which is used for artistic or aesthetic, entertainment, or ceremonial purposes. The traditional or classical European aspects of music often listed are those elements given primacy in European-influenced classical music: melody, harmony, rhythm, tone color/timbre, and form. A more comprehensive list is given by stating the aspects of sound: pitch, timbre, loudness, and duration. Common terms used to discuss particular pieces include melody, which is a succession of notes heard as some sort of unit; chord, which is a simultaneity of notes heard as some sort of unit; chord progression, which is a succession of chords (simultaneity succession); harmony, which is the relationship between two or more pitches; counterpoint, which is the simultaneity and organization of different melodies; and rhythm, which is the organization of the durational aspects of music.

Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band was born in 1972 by a few enthusiasts. Educationally, today, it is second to none in teaching the skill and art of the pipes and drums, as the Novice and Juvenile sections of the band have testified by achieving their own trophies. These young people are the next generation of bandsmen and women, contributing to Scottish culture. The author of this book is a parent who became involved with the band when her son and daughter became playing members in those early days. Thiis story is part of our livng history. We can read of the achievements of Pop Stars, Soap Stars, Celebrities, Boy Bands, Girl Bands, Peers of the Realm, Royalty, Great Battles. The battle fought by those early volunteers, with no money, no equipment, no rich sponsor, their names forgotten, was won, and the story should be told. In the 21st century, Boghall and Bathgate are still an independent Pipe Band, all volunteers, who have to juggle their everyday lives with a commitment to the band. Visitors come to Scotland for pleasure, leisure, family gatherings, and also to enjoy the music provided by Pipe Bands. Long may it continue, I hope you enjoy the reading.
