In this definitive biography, Ernle Bradford has brilliantly recreated Barbarossa’s remarkable life alongside a vivid portrayal of the Ottoman and Mediterranean worlds at this thrilling moment in history. Admiral, naval hero, pirate, warrior and empire-builder, Kheir ed-Din or Barbarossa, as he was known in the West, was a legendary figure. Born on Lesbos in Greece he rose to become High Admiral of the Ottoman Navy, Sultan of Algiers and friend and advisor to Suleiman the Magnificent. His life dominated the history of the Mediterranean in the 16th century. From the moment that he and his brother, Aruj, established themselves on the North African coast, the pattern of life and trade in the Mediterranean changed forever and for nearly 300 years after it was affected by the activities of raiders from what came to be called the Barbary Coast. His achievements in reorganizing the Ottoman Navy and his command of it helped the expansion of the Turkish Empire that threatened all of Europe.

Combat With Pirates: The Adventures of Admiral Napoleon and the Independent Fleet Some of the most evil pirates in history lived, plundered, tortured, and murdered in the 17th and 18th centuries, pirates who delighted in the agony and suffering of victims from all nations and to whom torture and murder were daily occurrences. They find their nemesis in a small dog named Napoleon who starts from nothing to build an invincible navy manned by a crew of men and women, Africans and Indians, dogs, cats, rats, chimpanzees and bonobos, gorillas, bears, jaguars, eagles, whales, sharks, and dolphins. While languishing in a dungeon beneath a pirate stronghold and faced with torture and death, they learn to fight with sword, spear, cutlass, and the martial arts, becoming a fighting force like no other and a family dedicated to each other in spite of their origins. After a desperate insurrection and capture of a single pirate ship against huge odds, they build the Independent Fleet beholden to no government or country with the mission of sailing the world's oceans to fight evil wherever they find it. Their travels and adventures put them in the thick of combat with pirates of all kinds, with the forces of slavery, the evils of whaling, the cruelty of animal fighting, the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, and outlaws both on land and sea. Desperate gun battles with enemy ships and even more desperate boarding actions and hand to hand fighting adds ship after ship to their squadron until the Independent Fleet becomes more powerful than any European navy in the Caribbean Sea and far more effective in destroying pirates. Combat With Pirates is a swashbuckling adventure of hand to hand and hand to paw combat, battles between single warships, squadrons of warships, and battles between entire fleets. Along the way, the dangers encountered by spies, traitors, and undercover agents unfold and love stories develop. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and ocean storms add to the dangers. Desperate battles between humans and animals and between squadrons of powerful warships fill the life and times of Admiral Napoleon and his remarkable fighting forces, while pirates and murderers come to rue the day they come up against him. Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, genders, and species, and Combat With Pirates introduces us to many of them. The golden age of piracy will never be the same when pirates come up against Admiral Napoleon and the Independent Fleet.

This is book one from three for the complete autobiography for Pirate Barbarossa(Red Beard) or Khaireddine Barbarous who dictated it on his colleague and friend in the sea life the poet and writer Sayed Ali Almuradi. He wrote his autobiography after an order from Sultan Soleiman Alkanuni known as Soleiman The Magnificient. The human is the son of his environment. What does mean this proverb? That means his environmental circumstances influence directly and indirectly his thoughts and behaviors along with his life. The fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were an extension of the culture of Piracy which had been spread worldwide centuries earlier in the Indian ocean, the Atlantic, and the Mediterranean. Piracy was considered as the standard, the norm, and the normal of that era. It was a source of enrichment for normal people and for countries. It was practiced by countries implicitly, so many pirates worked for the account of empires. Barbarossa and his brother Arruj were not the exceptions, they were raised in this world and atmosphere it wasn’t immoral to practice piracy. Something is clear is that they practiced piracy after they were normal traders with their ships and after the imprisonment and the torture of Arruj the Barbarossa's oldest brother by the Rhodes Knights on his way to Tripoli in Lebanon. Barbarossa, an Italian word meaning the Red Beard. Mostly the Venetians in the fifteenth century who called Khaireddine Basha or Khedher with this name. Barbarossa or Khaireddine was born in Midilli island in 1478, he died in Istanbul in 1546. At an early age, he use the ship as we use in our days the cars and all the transportations mean. With time the sea became really his real home. A normal person can work outside throughout the day and return at the end of the day to his home to take a rest, Barbarossa took this rest in his ship’s cabinet in the large of the sea everywhere. Through this autobiography, Barbarossa talked about all the incidents that he lives, saw, or testified about by himself. The religious context at that time was major in his stories as the adversaries the Ottoman empire in aside the Venice, the Spanish and the Portuguese empires in another side each side represents a religion and his followers the Ottoman empire represents Islam, the Spaniards, the Portuguese and the Venetians represents the Christianity. The use of words like Kaffer or kuffar which means unbelievers or infidels was frequent. Despite his solid heart as an adventurer in real life not like in Hollywood movies, I found that he has a very sensitive soul when the matter concerns his brother Arruj, his relatives, his men, and the poor that he tried always to help them everywhere. Barbarossa never talked about his mom, his education, and his Childhood. For example, he didn’t mention that his mom was a priest widow before she married his father. He didn’t mention that besides the military work of his father he was working on pottery and when they started trading he and his brother Arruj they sold the pottery of their father outside the Midilli island(Lesbos today). He didn’t specify that their brother Isaaq preferred administrative work. Barbarossa and his brother Arruj saved the lives of tens of thousands of Muslims and Jews escaping from the tyranny and the torture of the Spanish Chruch at that time and transferring them to North Africa and Greece in Salonica. This autobiography reflects all the cultures, values, morals, and behaviors of all people surviving at that time.

"Him cheat him friend of him last guinea Him kill both friar and priest, O dear! Him cut de t'roat of piccaninny Bloody, bloody buccaneer!" --old West Indian ballad This is the swashbuckling biography of the naval officer known as the Sword of England, the Welshman Henry Morgan. Over the years, Morgan came to be portrayed as a black-hearted, fierce pirate. This error in terms and in the assessment of Morganï¿1/2s character led to the filing of the first libel lawsuit, brought in protest to a book published in 1684 claiming he had been an indentured servant, was a pirate, and was responsible for atrocities. In fact, Morgan was commissioned to aid the British navy in fighting enemies of the crown and was a superb military tactician who led a dozen victorious campaigns against massive odds. In 1655, Spain was the greatest naval and military power on earth, and controlled the sea lanes of Central America and the Caribbean. Henry Morgan's career as a buccaneer officially began when, at age twenty, he landed in Barbados as part of a force deployed to capture Cuba or Hispaniola (Puerto Rico) for the British. The deployment failed, but the forces did capture Jamaica, which would become Morgan's adopted home base for the rest of his life. From there, Morgan planned the attacks that would enrich the British throne and usher in the era of British supremacy on the high seas. For his leadership in battle and as lieutenant governor of Jamaica, Admiral Sir Henry Morgan deserves to take his place alongside Sir Francis Drake and the Duke of Wellington in the panoply of history's greatest heroes.
