Contributors to this book present a comprehensive view of the current status, prospects, and problems of computer networking in higher education, examining networking from the perspectives of both computer users and network suppliers. In the opening chapter, William F. Miller discusses the role that computer networking is likely to play in higher education. He notes that a national network often can provide specialized services more cost-effectively than can individual institutions and is able to offer a wider variety of services than is available at any single computer center. In succeeding chapters, Ronald Segal reports the results of an extensive research project on networking that included the simulation of a national network serying higher education and research; Paul Heller describes the early experiences of the EDUNET network; and Robert Scott discusses important facets of the EDUNET Business Plan. In the concluding chapters, William Massy, Tad Pinkerton, and Barry Berman review conference workshops in three broad areas: policy issues in networking, facilitating services for networking, and network resources.

Explores the current context, role, and challenges of post-secondary education and presents options for promising pathways forward. The post-secondary educational system has undergone dramatic changes and experienced immense stress in the past two decades. Once regarded as the logical next step toward career opportunities and financial security, higher education is a subject of growing uncertainty for millions of people across the United States. It is more common than ever to question the return on investment, skyrocketing cost, and student debt burden of going to college. Prospective students, and many employers, increasingly view attending institutions of higher learning as inadequate preparation for entering the 21st century workforce. High-profile scandals—financial impropriety, sexual abuse, restrictions of free speech, among others—have further eroded public trust. In response to these and other challenges, leading voices are demanding strengthened accountability and measurable change. Higher Education's Road to Relevance illustrates why change is needed in post-secondary education and offers practical solutions to pressing concerns. The authors, internationally recognized experts in college-level teaching and learning innovation, draw heavily from contemporary research to provide an integrative approach for post-secondary faculty, staff, and administrators of all levels. This timely book helps readers identify the need for leadership in developing new networks and ecosystems of learning and workforce development. This valuable book will help readers: Understand the forces driving change in higher education Develop multiple pathways to create and credential self-directed learners Promote access to flexible, cost-effective, and relevant learning Adapt structures and pedagogies to address issues and overcome challenges Use an inclusive approach that extends to employers, K-12 educators, post-secondary educators, and policy-makers, among others Higher Education's Road to Relevance is a much-needed resource for college and university administrators, academic researchers, instructors and other faculty, and staff who support and interact with students.

The march towards on-line and blended teaching—present before the Covid-19 pandemic—has been accelerated by it, and there is no going back. Students and staff may object, but the economic drive towards “greater productivity” will inevitably result in less face-to-face (f2f) instruction. Therefore, it is incumbent for those delivering this precious, in-person resource to make maximum use of time...which raises the question, “how”? The second edition of Higher Education Computer Science offers some potential answers. It also addresses other questions, such as “why have f2f teaching at all?” “what is the purpose of f2f?” and “what is the appropriate balance between the two?” The first edition began to offer suggestions for optimising limited opportunities to get together with students. Aligned with that, this unique new volume examines how to use the technology available to maximum advantage: For example, resources such as Moocs and other on-line instructional materials can provide invaluable pedagogic support. In addition, the book addresses ‘problem-based learning,’ using robotics in the teaching of programming, and a multidisciplinary approach to data science. Although it includes a chapter on distance learning, there is greater emphasis placed on the soft, transferable skills and employability skills that are best delivered in person. Further, the work provides several examples of putting theory into practice when teaching computer science at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Written by experienced practitioners, each chapter tackles a particular teaching activity or topic within computing, presented in such a way that other practitioners can use. As such, this new volume will be an invaluable resource to those who want to protect and optimise in-person teaching.

Toward Quality Assurance And Excellence In Higher Education written by Al Jaber, Ahmed Odeh and has been published by River Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-15 with Education categories.

Quality Assurance is not a new concept in the education sector in general, and higher education in particular, though it is becoming increasingly more relevant and important. Higher education helps to improve an individual's quality of life by enabling them to inflate their knowledge and expertise, to grasp abstract concepts and theories, and to raise their awareness of the world and their community, and as such the assurance of quality is becoming more pivotal in the whole education process. There is no simple definition of the concept of quality in education, though numerous models and theories have been devised. Toward Quality Assurance and Excellence of Higher Education is a new episode of the Quality Assurance perception in higher education, which identifies the quality culture and orientation from the beginning, integrating crucial factors to build a “pyramid” of higher education excellence. The book compares concepts from the main theories of Quality Assurance, management and control when they are applied to educational systems in higher education. The book also presents a new model of excellence in higher education. Excellence is an architecture of building blocks that includes process performance, effectiveness, harmony and collaboration, and these bocks should be incorporated in a quality-oriented concept for sustainable excellence of higher education. The model integrates four main facets: the Educational System, Quality Assurance Managing and Control, Strategic Planning and Globalization. Also presented are international “best-practices” in quality assurance in higher education, from Japan and Finland.
