Plant disease management remains an important component of plant pathology and is more complex today than ever before including new innovation in diagnostic kits, the discovery of new modes of action of chemicals with low environmental impact, biological control agents with reliable and persistent activity, as well as the development of new plant varieties with durable disease resistance. This book is a collection of invited lectures given at the 9th International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP 2008), held in Torino, August 24-29, 2008 and is part of a series of volumes on Plant Pathology in the 21st Century. It focuses on new developments of disease management and provides an updated overview of the state of the art given by world experts in the different fields of disease management. The different chapters deal with basic aspects of disease management, mechanisms of action of biological control agents, innovation in fungicide application, exploitation of natural compounds and resistance strategies. Moreover, the management of soil-borne diseases and disease management in organic farming are covered.

This book provides a timely review of concepts in plant disease management involving microbial soil suppressiveness and organic amendments. Topics discussed include the impact of suppressive soils on plant pathogens and agricultural productivity, the enhancement of soil suppressiveness through the application of compost and the development of disease suppressive soils through agronomic management. Further chapters describe diseases caused by phytopathogens, such as Pythium, Fusarium and Rhizoctonia, interaction of rhizobia with soil suppressiveness factors, biocontrol of plant parasitic nematodes by fungi and soil suppressive microorganisms.

Most scientists and many of the world's farmers have abandoned traditional farming practices and systems in an effort to increase production and to improve the efficiency of land and labor use. The resulting "modern" systems largely ignore many of the sustainable pest management practices that have evolved among farmers over centuries. In this book

Organic Farming And Peanut Crops written by Darren C. Grossman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Peanuts categories.

Organic farming is the oldest way of farming, i.e., without the use of chemicals to enhance the production of meat, vegetables, milk and derivatives, and without the use of antibiotics and pesticides to decrease economical losses due to animal sickness and plant disease. Control of plant-parasitic nematodes is difficult, especially in organic farming systems, because in contrast to foliar diseases and insect pests, effective control methods and monitoring systems are not always available. Organic farmers struggle with nematode problems using cultural, physical and biological control methods. This book discusses effective management of plant-parasitic nematodes, which can be achieved by combining several control methods after identifying the nematodes in the field and understanding their biology. Moreover, in this book, the authors illustrate how participatory plant breeding (PPB) may answer the needs of organic agriculture, and how organic farmers and their organisations have met with researchers to build common experiments of plant breeding on farms. In addition, the early history and significance of the peanut crop is discussed. Annual world production of peanuts at 30 million tons makes this crop one of the most important agricultural commodities. The physiological and biochemical response of peanut microsimbionts under different types of stress are examined as well, and compared with rhizobia. This book also explores the concept of scientific paradigms and draws parallels with paradigms in agriculture, and in particular focuses upon organic farming and genetic engineering.

Biological Management Of Diseases Of Crops written by P. Narayanasamy and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-28 with Science categories.

Biological disease management tactics have emerged as potential alternative to chemical application for containing crop diseases. Biotic and abiotic biological control agents (BCAs) have been demonstrated to be effective against diseases caused by microbial plant pathogens. Combination of biotic and abiotic agents leads to synergism and consequent improvement in the effectiveness of disease control. It is essential to assay the biocontrol potential of all isolates/species of fungal, bacterial and viral biocontrol agents by different techniques in vitro and under greenhouse and field conditions and to precisely identify and differentiate the most effective isolates from less effective ones by employing biological, immunological and nucleic acid-based assays.
