Plants, Murder and Medical Mysteries by Dr Sandy Primrose is a collection of real-life stories which detail crimes - abduction, rape and murder - and medical mysteries that have been solved using forensic botany. The same expertise has been used to identify the sources of drugs, to authenticate artefacts, to detect food fraud and illegal logging of protected tree species. Agatha Christie's knowledge of poisons is discussed and details are given of a murderer who used one of her stories as a blueprint for his crime. Clues are given to some of the potions described by Shakespeare in his plays and the reader also is warned about plants that they would be wise to avoid.

"A bitter battle has sprouted in the village of Greenport on the eve of the annual maritime festival: Willow McQuade has transformed a vacant lot alongside Nature's Way Market & Cafe into a beautiful garden of healing plants--as much a tribute to her late aunt Claire, the shop's beloved founder, as an enlightening educational center. The town board awarded Willow the plot fair and square, but that's not how some folks see it--including Dr. Charles White, who invested in plans to develop a high-end boutique hotel on the property. When the belligerent surgeon publicly threatens Willow during the festival, Jackson Spade ratchets up the hostile confrontation to defend the woman he loves. The seeds of guilt have already taken root by the time Dr. White's corpse turns up among Willow's chamomile and periwinkle plants. To prove Jackson's innocence, she must dig deep to bring a killer to light."--Page [4] cover.

When her phone rang, Diane Macklin wondered what her sister wanted now. Then, she heard that their mother was in the Emergency Room with a heart problem. The doctor tending to her mother was Dr. Joe Adams, who was far from Diane's idea of the family doctor. He had been alone since his first wife had died, and was apparently heaven-sent as a mate for Diane, if she could only get past the trauma of her previous near-miss at the altar. The heart problem was hard to solve initially, the subsequent difficulty turned out to be murder, and affected the lives of both Diane and Joe. Dr. Richard Mabry is a retired physician, now writing "medical mysteries with heart." In addition to his medical books, he is the author of one non-fiction book, several novellas, and thirteen published novels. His novels have been finalists for the Carol Award, the Inspirational Reader's Choice Award, the Reviewer's Choice Award, the Selah Award, and others. He and his wife live in north Texas. In addition to regular efforts (thus far unsuccessful) to improve his golf game, he spends much of his time trying to convince his family that sitting at his desk staring into space does indeed represent work.

People have always been curious about the plants and animals with which they coexist. Primitive cultures identified edible and poisonous plants largely by trial and error, and then used them for hunting, executions, euthanasia, and magico-religious rites, as well as for their medicinalproperties. In this fascinating book, John Mann investigates the evolution of modern medicine from its roots in folk medicine, and reveals the continuing importance of natural plant and animal products, many of which remain undiscovered but under threat by the wholesale destruction of the Earth'swild places. In this new edition, he has updated the material to include discussion of the background to some of the most talked-about drugs of recent years, including Prozac and Viagra. 'This is an erudite treasure trove in which each page sparkles with a concoction of historical anecdote andscientific revelation.' The Good Book Guide 'The book is peppered throughout with the legend, superstition and science of bygone ages, and interesting reading they make.' New Scientist 'This highly entertaining account investigates the evolution of modern medicines. ...Professor Mann does it withgreat style.' The Lancet '... an excellent introductory text for those not liable to dizziness as they jump from one culture to another, or one century to the next. ' Nature '... provides intelligent material for those advocating conservation of our global plant resources because of theirpotentially important reservoir of therapeutically active chemicals for animal and human disease.' The Times Higher Education Supplement 'Delightfully rich... buy and read Mann's wonderful book.' Chemical and Engineering News

Medievalism and medieval medicine are vibrant subfields of medieval studies, enjoying sustained scholarly attention and popularity among undergraduates. Popular perceptions of medieval medicine, however, remain understudied. This book aims to fill that lacuna by providing a multifaceted study of medical medievalism, defined as modern representations of medieval medicine intended for popular audiences. The volume takes as its starting point the fictional medieval detective Brother Cadfael, whose observations on bodies, herbs, and death have shaped many popular conceptions of medieval medicine in the Anglophone world. The ten contributing authors move beyond Cadfael by exploring global medical medievalisms in a range of genres and cultural contexts. Beyond Cadfael is organized into three sections, the first of which engages with how disease, injury, and the sick are imagined in fictitious medieval worlds. The second, on doctors at work, looks at medieval medical practice in novels, films and television, and public commemorative practice. These essays examine how practitioners are represented and imagined in medieval and pseudo-medieval worlds. The third section discusses medicine designed for and practiced by women in the Middle Ages and today, with a focus on East Asian medical traditions. These essays are guided by the recognition that medieval medical practices are often in dialogue with contemporary medical practices that fall outside the norms of Western biomedicine.
