Throughout the twentieth century, neuronal researchers knew the adult human brain to be a thoroughly fixed and immutable cellular structure, devoid of any developmental potential. Plastic Reason is a study of the efforts of a few Parisian neurobiologists to overturn this rigid conception of the central nervous system by showing that basic embryogenetic processes—most spectacularly the emergence of new cellular tissue in the form of new neurons, axons, dendrites, and synapses—continue in the mature brain. Furthermore, these researchers sought to demonstrate that the new tissues are still unspecific and hence literally plastic, and that this cellular plasticity is constitutive of the possibility of the human. Plastic Reason, grounded in years of fieldwork and historical research, is an anthropologist’s account of what has arguably been one of the most sweeping events in the history of brain research—the highly contested effort to consider the adult brain in embryogenetic terms. A careful analysis of the disproving of an established truth, it reveals the turmoil that such a disruption brings about and the emergence of new possibilities of thinking and knowing.

A unique and beautiful approach to understanding the plastic problem with practical actions to help protect the planet. Every single minute, a dump-truck’s worth of plastic is emptied into the ocean, trashing beaches, killing wildlife, making food supplies dangerous, and contributing to climate change. Most plastic can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. And almost half of it is single use. Why are we doing this? Why don't we stop? Can we undo the damage we’ve already done? Why Does Plastic Hurt the Planet? unravels these difficult questions. Using the Mind Mappers technique that combines beautiful illustrations, easy-to-follow charts, and compelling text, the youngest readers can learn how plastics they use every day are hurting the earth, and the things they can do today to protect the planet. BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS: Combines the beauty of a picture book with science-based facts and information. TIMELY TOPIC: Inspired by activists such as Greta Thunberg, kids are concerned about the environment and are taking active roles at home, school, and in the community to protect the planet. ACCESSIBLE TO EVERY READER: The text is carefully layered and leveled for emerging to proficient readers. COMPLETE THE MIND MAPPERS COLLECTION: How Do We Stop Climate Change? and Are We Running Out of Water? are also available.

Plastic Free written by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-08 with Nature categories.

In July 2011, Rebecca Prince-Ruiz challenged herself to go plastic free for the whole month. Starting with a small group of people in the city of Perth, the Plastic Free July movement has grown into a 250-million strong community across 177 countries, empowering people to reduce single-use plastic consumption and create a cleaner future. This book explores how one of the world’s leading environmental campaigns took off and shares lessons from its success. From narrating marine-debris research expeditions to tracking what actually happens to our waste to sharing insights from behavioral research, it speaks to the massive scale of the plastic waste problem and how we can tackle it together. Interweaving interviews from participants, activists, and experts, Plastic Free tells the inspiring story of how ordinary people have created change in their homes, communities, workplaces, schools, businesses, and beyond. It is easy to feel overwhelmed in the face of global environmental problems and wonder what difference our own actions could possibly make. Plastic Free offers hope for the future through the stories of those who have taken on what looked like an insurmountable challenge and succeeded in innovative and practical ways, one step—and one piece of plastic—at a time.
