Play and Display: Dua Moda Pergelaran Reyog Ponorogo di Jawa Timur merupakan telaah atas pergelaran tari rakyat Jawa, yakni Reyog Ponorogo. Premis dasar telaah ini adalah pandangan bahwa makna Reyog Ponorogo niscaya berkelindan di dalam peristiwa pergelarannya, dan secara kolaboratif makna itu dibangun serta dibangun-ulang oleh partisipan ketika peristiwa terjalin serta pengerjaan pergelaran tersebut. Pandangan ini lantas membawa saya untuk memeriksa unsurunsur formal, yakni: bagaimana unsur-unsur itu disusun-rangkaikan menjadi pergelaran di pelbagai latar ruang-waktu dan kesempatan?; bagaimana para partisipan berinteraksi dalam latar pegelaran yang berbeda-beda? Melalui penelusuran itu, lantas kajian ini mengafirmasi dua moda pergelaran Reyog Ponorogo, yaitu: modus presentasional dan modus partisipatoris. Buku ini mengungkapkan bahwa kedua moda pergelaran merupakan peristiwa publik dengan pembingkaian temporal, spasial, ideasional agar orang Ponorogo—selaku pelaku maupun penonton—mengalami (secara visual, aural, fisikal dan mental) sejumlah aspek penting dari keberadaan mereka sebagai pribadi, warga masyarakat Ponorogo, serta warga bangsa. Kekuatan pergelaran Reyog Ponorogo terletak pada fakta bahwa pergelaran itu merupakan momen bagi orang Ponorogo untuk mengalami dan mengungkapkan ihwal-ihwal pokok tersebut dengan cara yang menghibur, yakni: play dan display.
